How difficult is it to change the alternator on a 2002 dodge stratus?

I'm not even sure it's the alternator that's bad. Yesterday, I went out to start the car and it wouldn't turn over, just made a slight clicking noise. Got a jump, the car started, but, when I turned it off after about 30 minutes of running, it wouldn't start back up.

Don't want to have to spend a mint to fix it? My dad said he could fix it if the alternator is easy to get to. Any advice at all would be appreciated.

It would be best to have the Battery load-tested, check voltage while running, and check over the wiring connections to be sure. It's possible that the Battery is just not holding a charge. If the system voltage is above 13 with the engine running, you probably need a Battery.

If it is the Alternator that's bad, how hard does vary between engines. Here's instructions for your model, and the various engines. There's also a section on testing, but you'd need some electrical testing equipment.

Whatever you do, don't disconnect the Battery while the car is running. I'm surprised some Bozo hasn't suggested it already.

I wouldn't just throw parts at it. Get it running and take it to a shop, or the professionals at auto zone if you'd like, and have a charging system test done.
it depends on what engine it has in it,that will determine how easy or hard it is to get to and remove, good luck,
id do this jump it again drive it to the nearest shop and have it tested take only a minute most dont charge to test the battery and charging system even auto zone is a good place just dont shut it off could it be that the battery cables are dirty or loose.... what about the belts old dry loose is the battery bad then is it the alternator... id have it tested first to know whats bad and in most cases id do the work my self..... some are a pain some are not but they are all do able at home.... but no guessing.... it will cost you more fixing things that dont need it
This might help. I wrote an article on eHow the other day to change the alternator in a dodge caravan. It's pretty general. Here is the link....... http://www.ehow.com/how_2288299_replace-鈥?/a>
