How do you change a alternator belt on a 95 isuzu pick up?

show pictures on how to change the belt
How do you change a alternator belt on a 95 isuzu pick up?
take it to a mechanic. it is very complex
How do you change a alternator belt on a 95 isuzu pick up?
There should be one pulley that is just used for tension.it's most always smooth and rides on the back of the belt.put a wrench or whatever you can on it to turn it clockwise and it should be spring loaded. It will relieve the tension on the belt.Pull the belt off and put on a new one.
there are different types of pulley setups on different vehicles. there could be the tensioner pulley setup, as stated in the previous post, but it could also be the older setup. if you buy a haynes manual (or clyner, whichever, i prefer haynes) it will have the pictures showing you exactly what to do, step by step. manuals typically cost less than $20. it is not complicated by any means if youre a fairly intelligent individual with any mechanical sense at all.

  • Just changed the alternator but the car still shuts off when removing ground post...?

Got a 2005 Ford Taurus, it was having problems and was not keeping charged for very long. When we removed the negative post it shut off. So we got a new Alternator for it and installed it yesterday, But when we remove the negative post it still shuts off. We doubled checked and everything is installed correctly, what else could it be?
Just changed the alternator but the car still shuts off when removing ground post...?
Your car shut off because an alternator needs a small amount of electricity to make electricity. (The field circuit)

The trick of removing the battery cable to see if it's charging went out with old cars that used generators. Removing the battery cable on a car made in the last 20 years is a good way to fry the electronics which can cost thousands to replace.

Start the car and measure the voltage with a voltmeter or multimeter. You can get a cheap one at Wal Mart. It should read 13.5-14.5 volts if it is charging properly.
Just changed the alternator but the car still shuts off when removing ground post...?
First of all, I believe it is not a good idea to take of the negative post of the battery anymore because of the computer controls. That used to be the accepted way to check the alternator, but it is now being discouraged, it can damage your car's systems.

Take the car to the parts store and they should check your battery and charging system for free.
You need to use a DVOM (volt meter) to test and see if it is working correctly, the new vehicles will not stay running when you disconnect the battery like they did in the older vehicles!
i would,nt be doing that too much especially to a car with a computer. it,s probably something else causing it to shut off. it could be the battery that has a short in it .who knows you might have got a bad alternator.you can get bad in anything you buy.

How to change a alternator belt on a kia optima 2003?
    It's under the hood, silly!

Does the alternator belt make a noise if it's either too loose or too tight?

ok so a while ago me and my friend changed the alternator on my car and afterwards there was this really loud noise coming from the alternator belt. So we tightened it and the noise went away. But after driving around for a while the noise has started to come back, only it's not as loud as it was before, but it's still annoying.

So does this mean that I just havn't found the right setting that it needs to be at?
Does the alternator belt make a noise if it's either too loose or too tight?
they will squeal if loose :)
Does the alternator belt make a noise if it's either too loose or too tight?
More than likely yes. Your not adjusting it correctly,Or Your not getting everything tight after the adjustment. You need to keep the alternator adjusted while it's being tightened whether it be will an adjustment assembly with a tension bolt or the other kind you need to use a pry bar to keep the tension on the alternator while tightening

    the slide adjustment bolt
yep it will make a noise had one that broke if you drive without one you will need a new battery too
no it prabably means that the belt streched a little. try tightening it again and spray %26quot;belt dressing%26quot; on it ($2.99 in any auto parts store). that should fix your squeak
Typically it will squeak if it's not tight enough, You didn't mention weather or not you replaced the belt when you did the alt. So I will assume that you didn't. personally it's my policy to change it need it or not. Odds are while the belt still looks ok it may be deteriated enough to make it squeal,
The belt can make noises if too loose or tight and also if out of alignment. As if a washer was not placed properly when replacing the alternator. Try the tension adjustment first. Do no use belt dressing. You may need a new belt, I would have replaced it with the alternator.
When you changed the alternator it might have been smart to change out the belt at the same time. Recheck the alignment of the alternator belt and see if it lines up straight. Tension is what most people adjust, but the pulleys are not aligned right there are additional stresses to the belt that will premature wear it out.

Also correctly torque the hold down bolts. Hope this helps.
I would agree with the diagnosis that you did not tighten the correct bolts or didn't tighten them securely.

I would guess, as with most alternators, there are two bolts to tighten, one at the arm where the belt adjustment is made, usually a curved piece, and the other where the alternator attaches to the engine, usually a long bolt and a nut, that is the pivot point. keep pressure on the alternator to keep the belts tight as you tighten the bolts. Don't over do it or you can damage the bearings in the alternator.

Why wont my serptine belt stay on after alternator change?

I had my alternator replaced on my 2000 1.8L Turbo VW Bettle and now since that has happened my serpentine belt has fallen off 3 times. This last time that I put it back on I noticed that the roller at the bottom of the spring loaded tension setter is not in line with the rest of the pulley track. It sets to the inside of the track and is wearing a ridge on the inside of that roller. I was wondering if when they put my tension setter back on after changing the alternator if they for got to put a piece back in like a spacer. If not, what would be an explanation for the tension setter roller to be off track.
Why wont my serptine belt stay on after alternator change?
your belt tensioner should be bolted and torqued properly, generally there's no spacer that i know of that holds it on the side of the block but who knows.

it is possible they didn't tighten all the way and the belt is riding off the pulley on it enough to throw it. Have them take it back off and make sure it is properly aligned.
Why wont my serptine belt stay on after alternator change?
Sounds like they put a spacer in the wrong spot, like on the wrong side of a bracket or something. Take it back and demand that they fix the problem free of charge.
The tensioner is probally bad, they dont cost much and arent that hard to change. However, I would go back to the mechanic and complain, he should help you out with it a lil bit. He shouldve seen it when he changed the belt.
Both of the top posters are correct, look to make sure the pulley on the tensioner or the alternator is in line with its neighbors.

You should probably replace the belt too since its been damaged by repeatedly coming off.
you need to replace the tensioner. it is spring loaded, and the spring can wear. a tensioner onn most vehicles should be less than $50.00. you probably should replace the pulleys as well, as they can wear too. tensioner/pulley combos can be purchased. As for your mechanic, he had to have noticed!!!! He's just lazy! Find a new one
take it back they installed it wrong its not lining up with the other pulleys. Its got to be presicely straight with the other pulleys

How do i change an alternator on a 1989 nissan pathfinder?

you need to disconect the possite battery cable first of all, loosen the belt tensioner, remove the belt, and disconect the alternator cables, alternator is only hold on by 3 to 4 screws, unscrew and it will come off right off......

Changing a generater to a alternator the wiring of it ?

what i want to do is add a alt to my camper to chg to batty. in the back
Changing a generater to a alternator the wiring of it ?
It is easy to do and will satisfy your needs a lot better, altho' you did not post your question clear. what year and make of engine? Using the right mount should not be a problem. as far as the wiring as always, There is a pos. [+] wire that goes directly to the battery from the rear of the alternator.

Alternators that has the regulator mounted internally only needs one other wire. This wire is to 'excite' the alternator when the operation begins.[switch on]

    %26quot;BRILLIANT%26quot;!!!!
Changing a generater to a alternator the wiring of it ?
Have you looked at using a battery isolator? Might save you some headaches.

Do you mean you want a separate generator with its own motor to be used to charge the battery? This is incredibly inefficient unless you absolutely have to charge the battery while the RV isn't running, because of the poor efficiency of the gasoline generator engine. If you don't have it already, a splitter to charge the inside battery from the motor of the vehicle is much better.

If you want to charge a 12 volt battery from a 120 volt generator, just buy a plug in battery charger.

And you seem to think an alternator is a 12 volt device while a generator is something else. Cars used to have 12 volt generators for recharging batteries and alternators are more reliable and cheaper, so all cars have them now - make AC electricity and rectify it with solid state electronics. You can't change a generator to an alternator.

Do I have to change out my alternator?

If I add a 1800w subwoofer system into my car will I have to upgrade my alternator?
Do I have to change out my alternator?
minimum 220amp alternator a capacitor, and the expensive part.. a secondary yellow top Optima battery (deep cycle) and also more importantly a battery isoloator.

the isolator will keep your alternator charging both batteries and keep the car running without messing with the cars electronics. this is very important.

the capacitor will help with power draw, but not much.

the yellow top optima will handle the excessive vibration as it's a lead paste, vs. water. it won't leak, and there's no lead cells to crack.

the deep cycle will power the sub easily. the alternator won't have to struggle to try %26amp; keep up.

How do i change a alternator?
Boy this is weird, I just did one of these on an Infinity I30 yesterday, same engine and similar body.

Remove the cooling fan + shroud assy.

Loosen the idler pulley and remove the alternator belt.

Remove the right undercover, (the alternator is going to come out from the bottom).

    Remove the right side cover.

Remove the 4 AC compressor bolts so you can slide it forward.

Remove the large battery feed wire.

    Remove the upper alternator bolt.

Lean the alternator toward the radiator and remove the other alternator plug on top.

It may take some prying to get the lower part of the alternator off the bracket.

You are going to move the AC compressor toward the radiator and toward your right and the alternator will come out the side. It will be tight but it will come out. The bottom radiator hose will be a little in the way but it can stay on. It's a small pain in the butt. :)

*** Upon reassembly plug the alternator connector in first, you can put the lower bolt in to hold it up then lean the alternator outward to do this. It's almost impossible to do it after the top alternator bolt is in.

    replace batt today
Your alternator has a voltage and current regulation system. I think that your alternator is defective in that puts out too much current. If you have a true ammeter gauge, it should show the charging rate but most new vehicles use only voltmeter. Most alternators will produce about 30 amps max and then drop down as the battery charges. If the charging rate exceeds that amount and if it does not drop as the battery charges, then the regulator is not working properly. You have to get this corrected soon cause if you allow an abnormally high charging rate your battery will overheat and it could burst. If you have a real voltmeter it should read between 12 and 13 volts as you drive. It will read around 14 volts when you first start the car and then drop down to 12-13.
The Delco alternator and regulator assembly you are using either works or doesn't.Are you sure the volt meter is calibrated right?

Battery light is on after Two alternator changes?

I had the alternator replaced TWICE yesterday and still having problems....

I had replaced it only because it was making one heck of a noise.. (bearings went out)... So I took it in and had it replaced today with a 80 amp BOSH alternator. It was charging and checked out ok so I drove home. I made a quick stop (about 20 min) at the store and when I came out and started it up, the Battery light was on..

So I took it back and they changed out the Alternator with another new one, tested it, yep charging.. So i went home again.. came out tonight about 5 hr later, and the Battery light is on again... It's not charging...

What is going on...?? The battery is 2 years old and the only reason for changing the Alternator was because of the bearing noise... Belt is new, Idler pulley is new, engine is quiet at idle.

Any ideas..?? I am stuck until Monday unless I can fix this...

Battery light is on after Two alternator changes?
Could be damage to battery because of the prior failing alternator/voltage regulator.
Battery light is on after Two alternator changes?
A bad batch of alternators OR a defective battery.

Every year 1.6 million alternators are replaced when it was the battery that was the problem.

Infrequently - a battery cannot be charged.

Quick test: Connect a portable, automatic battery charger, (one with a meter) and watch the meter. If it is set on 8 amps and does not rise to a 4 to 8 amp charging rate or does not show ANY charging rate - then look at a defective battery.

Only if the battery has a full charge of 12.66V - OR - is defective - will the charger not charge.
First open up the battery cap, and check if water is in the cells.

The battery could be the problem.

Next check your belts, are they tight?

I'd go with the battery and have the battery checked out.
I am guessing those were aftermarket alternators rather than new OEM from the dealer. Your experience is why I gave up on aftermarket alternators about 15 years ago. The very high failure rate in the first day of service was too much to stand. From your description it is hard to blame the problem on anything except the alternator - put one in, it works for a while.

At this point a battery charger may be your best friend. Modern chargers are much kinder to batteries than earlier ones and $50 or so can get you a beauty if you don't have one now. I had to replace my old clunker and I am very happy with my Schumacher SE-5212A. As long as you are just driving in town and not running the fan on high with headlights the battery should keep you going.

The alternative is another of what you have... unless they still have your original. At least it worked.

Take it to a parts store and have them test the charging sytem for free.
I would say your battery is bad but to be on the safe side I would go to autozone and get a free charging system check.
maybe you got a bad alternator. should still be under warranty. find the receipt or if you can not find it go back to where you bought it %26amp; have them check it. if it is not bad you will need to replace your battery.
With the car engine running, use a voltmeter to measure the output voltage of the alternator. If it is measured 13-14 V, your alternator is good. This means your battery fails to hold the charge. You need a new battery.
It could be both, eather the alternator or the battery
Local Auto parts store can check both. Hitch a ride and take your battery to them and they will tell if batt. is good. If its neither you have what is called a phantom charge using juice from your battery while it is parked....Ie clock, something plugged into ciggarette lighter or dome or trunk light.

How do I change the alternator on a 2000 mazda mpv minivan?

Minivans are a bit harder, as they kind of cram everything into the engine compartment...while you may not like this, I'd take it to a shop. I work on cars, and don't like vans...but that's my preference.

Otherwise, remove the negative battery cable and put it to the side...find the serpentine belt tensioner, relieve the tension with a breaker bar or wrench, slip the belt off the alternator...remove the wires on the alternator, remove the two to three bolts holding it to the brackets (you may have to remove a bracket too)...remove alternator.

Put the new alternator on it, in reversing the steps. Be careful in putting the wires back on...when you put the belt back on, make darn sure the belt is tracking in all the grooves on ALL the pulleys, and routes as per the label routing picture.

My car battery refuses to hold a charge and the alternator does not seem to be giving enough voltage to it...?

My car battery refuses to hold a charge and the alternator does not seem to be giving enough voltage to it...?
When a load is placed on the alternator, such as recharging the battery, it is harder to turn. Therefore, a worn belt could be slipping and not turning the alternator fast enough. Tighten or replace the belt before any more tests and before buying any more parts.
My car battery refuses to hold a charge and the alternator does not seem to be giving enough voltage to it...?
Have you replaced the belt. If the belt is worn it may not being doing it's job.
#1. did you replace the alternator with a new one, from a junkyard, or rebuilt?

If your cars alternator died, its probably a common problem, so if you replaced it with one from the junkyard or rebuilt, it be faulty... its not unusual at all to hear of a rebuilt failing the day its installed.

#2. did you spend the money on a high quality battery, or a reconditioned unit?

once again, same thing, if you went with a reconditioned unit, it could already be failing.

#3. charge your battery with a charger, then drive normally, and if it dies again, start feeling wire connections, feel the battery terminals, if you can, feel the wires behind the dash... if any of them feel warm or hot, you have a short, or loose connection. this could easily kill a battery.

obviously, make sure you hooked up the alternator wiring harness... youd be suprised to hear some of the stuff people do..

#4. did you replace the alternator relay? this is probably the longest shot to diagnose a problem, but it may be worth a shot.
Ok, so if you drove in to an Advance Auto or AutoZone store and had them test the battery and charging system on the car (they do it in the parking lot at some locations), then you could get one more confirmation that you, in fact, have a good battery and alternator. In that case, I would next test the %26quot;parasitic current draw%26quot; from the battery. When you've parked your car for the night, there shouldn't be more than 1/4 ampere (250 milliamperes) of current being drawn from the battery as it sleeps in your garage. It's easy for you to check and see how much current is actually being drained from your battery when the car's parked by connecting a Digital Multi-Meter (DMM, $15 Sears) in series between a battery post and the cable you've disconnected from it. Make sure to first set the DMM to the 10 Amp scale. Don't worry about wire polarity, because you'll simply read either plus or minus Amps readings as you swap the wire leads. The main thing is to see if your reading more than 0.25 Amps (1/4 Amp or 250 milliamps). If you read something like One Amp or more, you've got a problem with something being on in the car that's drawing current when everything should be shut off. For example, is there a light on in the trunk that you can't see is on? Did you wire up your own alarm etc and not know it's drawing excessive current (amps)? Is the glove compartment lamp on? Is the hood lamp on? etc. Eventually, you can remove one fuse at a time from the fuse box to see if that stops the excessive current flow and locate the circuit causing the problem. Remember, you need to drive the car a couple times a week to keep the battery charged up too.

How do I change the alternator for a 1990 Toyota Celica GT 2.2L?

Any help is appreciated. I am a single female so I have to do it myself cause I am also BROKE. So, I am ready.....any advice is so greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks Again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How do I change the alternator for a 1990 Toyota Celica GT 2.2L?
A fairly easy repair for a novice. Disconnect the battery cables before you start. Alternator is on your left looking from the front of the car. Driven by the serpentine belt. You need to disconnect the power cable and control harness first. Power cable is on the front. One big brass nut under a plastic cover. The other harness is on the back of the alternator(right hand side, the side away from the pulley) It has a plastic housing you squeeze to disengage and pull. The unit is only held on by two bolts. One on top that is used for adjusting the tension on the belt. It is bolted through a slotted bracket to allow for adjustment. The other one is directly under the pulley on the alternator. This is a long one which the alternator pivots on. You may not be able to see it but if you reach just under the pulley you can feel it. Disconnect the wires, loosen both bolts and remove the belt, finish removing the bolts and yank that baby out.

I think its to the left of the engine. There are 2 belts there. The alternator one is on the right side, near the engine. The other belt is to the left of it. You need to take away the other belt and replace the alternator belt and put the other belt on after. Or take it to a local mechanic, I did and only paid 30 bucks because I got references...

My 1996 devile's battery keeps on dieing after about an 1hr i changed the alternator and battery already?

Make sure that the main fuses which are either on the positive battery cable end or in the engine compartment fuse box are good. They blow if someone jumps the battery backwards by mistake. That will keep an alternator from charging. The fuses are at least 60 to100 amp and are bolted in if in the fuse box. I'm not sure if a vehicle as old as yours has fuses or the fuseable link wires found in older American cars.

New alternators can burn out if installed in a vehicle with a bad or discharged battery, so keep that in mind.

Your battery has a dead cell in it. Take it back to where you bought it. I should be under warranty.

I didn't change the battery though, could this cause the problem? It runs fine and then just kills! Please help me, I am a single Mom.
I have changed the alternator on my 1990 Buick Park Avenue and it still has to be jump started. Why?
The primary electrical system is such a pain in the butt!

I am hopeful I'm not insulting you here, but so you understand what's going on, a brief explanation first.

When you start the car, you are activating the battery to provide electricity to the starter motor. Once the car starts, the current is shut off to the starter and the alternator starts charging the battery again. There are other things going on also, but that's the basics for starting the car.

Since the car stars, we can eliminate the starter motor. That's good!

Now from here there are a couple things.

When a battery goes bad, what happens is that it builds resistance, and becomes almost impossible to charge. The current provided from the alternator is not strong enough to overcome the resistance and it can't charge the battery.

If by chance, you called a tow truck, the charge they provide is much stronger than the charge provided from your car's alternator. This is why the battery may have been charged even though it needs to be replaced.

If this is the problem, what happens, is that after the battery is charged, your car will start up fine, and everything works. But your engine, lights, radio, and anything else is running off the battery, and your alternator is not able to charge the battery. When this occurs, as soon as the battery is drained, the car just dies. This is what you experienced.

Now with the alternator, this is easier to explain. It simply is not charging the battery. And once again, the same thing will happen. Once the battery is drained, the car will just die.

The difficutly is that you don't know what the source of the problem is. Is it the battery, or is it the alternator?

Typically, you test the battery first. It's easier to pull from the vehicle, it's easier to test, and takes a lot less time.

Now with this, when purchasing a new (or rebuilt) alternator, it's not unusual to get a bad one. Although this is a frustrating problem, it's not the end of the world. You just take it back to where you purchased it from, and they replace it, no problem.

So at this point you don't know if it's the battery of a bad alternator.

I'm sorry, but I think you should start from scratch. Have the battery tested before you take the alternator back. Once they test it, you will know if it needs to be replaced. If it does, then you have solved your problem. You just pop the new battery in there.

Good luck, and I know it doesn't help, but we've all been there!
I have changed the alternator on my 1990 Buick Park Avenue and it still has to be jump started. Why?
It could be that the battery can't hold a charge any longer or just a faulty regulator switch. It can also just be a faulty ground wire. Look at the posts of the battery and check the connections, if they are badly corroded, clean them to ensure that you have a proper circuit.
apparently the battery is shot, get it checked out at autozone, it might have a bad cell in it.

Go to autozone.com and follow the steps to your particular car. They will walk you through all the steps one by one. You can do this...it ain't a big deal. Just make sure you get the belt the right tension...about 1/2 inch of playwhen you push down on it. If you get a new belt, remember to tighten it up a few days later as the new belt will stretch.

  • Does an alternator on a car make winding sound?

The alternator was changed, still the same.. What could be the problem?
Does an alternator on a car make winding sound?
Your alternator should NOT make a whining sound, and I WOULD worry about it, even if it's NOT loud. It could GET loud later, when the work is out of warranty. The belt could be too tight or too loose, or the new alternator could be defective. It could also be misaligned pulleys. It may also be something other than the alternator making the sound, such as the timing belt, or even a vacuum leak.

Either way, you should take it back to the mechanic who installed the alternator. He shouldn't have released the car to you in the first place, at least until he figured out what the sound was.

If HE'S the one who told you that this is normal, then that means he has no idea what the sound is, %26amp; he's just trying to get rid of you. You might eventually have to take it to someone else.
Does an alternator on a car make winding sound?
some alternators make a whining sound, it could be the bracket is bent or misaligned, unless it's really loud, i wouldn't worry about it...

i dont have a horn button, but once while i was driving the horn went on by itself, so i unplugged the horn, the horn relay was really old, so i replaced it, i taught that was the problem of my battery draining. but i got new battery and alternator put in, but still drains battery
I have a 1963 nova, i changed the alternator and battery same day and then battery drains?
Both of the previous posters make good points. A poor quality connection, either on the ground side between the engine and the Negative battery post, or between the Alternator output terminal (the large red wire on the back) and the Positive battery post, can keep the alternator from doing it's job well. Of course, there are other things which can cause the Alternator not to work, like a bad Voltage Regulator (external on your car) not feeding the field circuit that controls it's output.

On modern cars, you pretty much need an Ammeter to check for a battery drain, but on your car, probably just the clock takes current while the car is off. So if you unplug that first, you shouldn't have anything else taking current that would light a test light. Here's an article on checking for drains. You can disregard the stuff about computers and such parts that stay on after the car is shut off.

    http://www.aa1car.com/library/battery_ru…

Here's an article on charging system checks, in case there's no drain. Again, you can disregard the stuff about computers controlling the Alternator, like most are nowadays.

    http://www.aa1car.com/library/charging_c…

And if you have access to a Voltmeter, here's an article about the best way to test the quality of your cable and wiring connections, without having to even take them apart.

I have a 1963 nova, i changed the alternator and battery same day and then battery drains?
is there a light in the bootspace? sometimes the switch in the bootlid fails and the light stays on. the answer is to take the bulb out.

look at the battery lead which connects to the car body. what happens is that you get a poor connection then the alternator can not charge the battery properly. unbolt it, clean off the rust. you could fit a new earth wire if it looks poor.
Here's how you find out what's draining a battery. You have to use a 12 volt test light, but they are cheap.

Take the fuses out one at a time. Connect the test light across the connection of each fuse socket. When the test light lights up, bingo, that's the circuit that's causing the drain.

Then you have to do some more investigation on that circuit, but at least you know where to look.

My check engine warning light doesnt flash on like the other warning lights when I crank car. Is ECM bad?
you might want to check the bulb first on that one those do burn out especially if they been on for a while other that that it can be caused by a bad ecm, that will make the car run real bad and have ll kinds of problems,id check the bulb then rescan it to see if the light works,if not check the wiring from the ecm over to the dash that sometimes causes problems with the cel light,if all this fails you may wind up at an electrical shop for them to trace the wire or fault down and find it,good luck.

%26lt;what he said. Pretty much, you just take the old one out and put the new one in. They are heavy tho, take care. About 10 lbs, I guess, but when you're trying to grab one while bending over the engine, it ain't easy. Be sure to get the wires right, there's only about 2 or 3, so it's not easy to screw up, but make a sketch of the old wiring b4 you start.

if you have a good alternator and battery and its not charging check the fuse! iam not to sure but it might be inline with the positive wire.

check the power and see if there any dirt on the connections

I have replaced the alternator and battery twice in the last 2 months, will loose my power randomly?
Could be one or both of your battery cables.
what kind of batt terminals do you have? are they the kind that you tighten two bolts that crushes the cable? those are garbage.
MD I don't know which nes you are refering to, the side terminal pancaked donut shaped 1s or what?

Eitherway i think he should make sure hes grounded, see were the blk/neg goes and make surethats solid. then make sure your positive cable is not damaged. make sure the wires coming out of the alt are on there tight and are not torn up. follow the wiresfrom the alt completely, put an interim wire in its place to see how hat charges your batter and monitor that with an ohmmeter. and check yoiur fuse as well. And also do you know if when you started the car it started off of pure battery charge or ifthe alt was doing anything at all sporadically? it seems like its kinda half doing it so the wires are probally damaged.

How to change an alternator on a 1996 Ford Taurus GL?

Remove the serpentine belt by detensioning the tensioner pulley. It's a tight squeeze, but it can be done without loosening the engine mounts. Disconnect the connector at the alternator, and loosen and remove the eyelet for the positive battery cable. Unbolt the alternator from the bracket and remove it. Install the new alternator, and reconnect the connector and battery cable eyelet, and pull the tensioner pulley back and reinstall the belt. There should be a belt routing diagram under the hood to help you out with this step. This would also be a good time to change the serpentine belt and tensioner pulley. If you're not used to changing belts in tight spaces, this may be a better job for a good independent repair shop.

How to change an Alternator for a 2004 Mini Cooper?
They designed the damn car around the alternator! Just like the Porsche 911 Carrera...the sparks were designed with the car around it!!

Save yourself aggravation...take it to a masochist mechanic....they like pain.
The engine compartment is so tight dude...major p.i.t.a.

It should look something like this (this is a shot of the turbo engine)

    http://www.roadfly.com/new-cars/wp-conte…

First off: Disconnect the positive terminal on the BATTERY! SERIOUSLY!

See that metal piece with the vents connected with the serpentine belt? That's the alternator. The thing right above it that's depressing the serpentine belt is the tensioner. Release the tension on the tensioner (or remove it); remove the serpentine belt. Remove the bolts holding the alternator in place with a torque wrench and metric sockets. Replace the alternator also reconnecting the alt to battery cables. Torque the alternator bolts to factory specs. Re-guide the serpentine belt in the factory configuration removing tension from the tensioner (or reinstalling the tensioner). Voila...it's done.

But...the thing I'm not telling you is that because the engine compartment is so cramped on a mini cooper you ALMOST always have to work on the engine from beneath, meaning you have to remove the plastic shrouds and pretty much do everything upside down if you don't have a lift. You can do it with ramps but you'll be on your back 100% of the time. Hence...P.I.T.A.

Alternator problem:bought a Suzuki Grand vitara 2005from suzuki dealership last month ,?
The dealership is trying to get you to delay getting them to do the repairs until the warranty expires. Then YOU pay for the repairs.

Noises don't go away on their own. If it is in fact the alternator, insist the dealership fix the problem. Document the who, what, where, when and why of your conversations with your mechanic and dealership.

Who did you talk to (your mechanic and the dealership - get their names).

What did you talk about (noisy alternator and the 90 day warranty).

Where (car dealership on [address] and your mechanic at [address]).

When (list all dates - when you bought the car, when the noise started, when you talked to people).

Why (the alternator was making noises as identified by your mechanic).

It could also be the idler pulley or another belt driven accessory. A stethoscope will help to identify the offending part. I use one on my car. They're available at NAPA for about $20.

The better your documentation, the better your chances of winning in small claims court when you have to file.

I would take it back to the dealership. The dealership is hoping the time will expire and they don't have to fix it. Alternator do not have a break in period, it is either working or not working. If it is making noise the bearing is going out, so let them get you a new one.

Check that you have replaced all of the wires that you have removed from both the battery and the alternator. and that they ar on the right terminals. this is the only thing it can be if your battery is fully charged, and it worked, check that you have gass in it.

    Good luck!

chaging the alternater? is it better to go in from the top or bottom / do i need to put the car on stands?? do i need to chamge 1 or all, any of the belts at this time?? AND FINALLY do you know any single women in bakersfield
What is the best way to change the alternator on a 1994 nissan sentra 2.0?
The best way to do it is from the bottom, putting it on jackstands would be better for saftey. If your going to have the belts off anyways, take a look at them make sure they're not really crack and if they are go ahead and replace them. Sorry can't help you with the ladies, but a good running car doesn't hurt.

Could a blown 100A fuse cause battery failure/bad alternator charge?

As i was driving home i noticed my Volt gauge was below 12V so i decided to swap my battery thinking it that was the cause but i was wrong. I changed the alternator and put a fully charged battery as well and still find my self speeding home with the lights of and battery almost dead. So through research they say to replace your 100a fuse as it might need replacing. I'm just wanting to confirm if it could be the case.

I have never done an alternator but if you pick up a Haynes manual (or similar) they will give you the steps and a difficulty rating.

I would be surprised if it was more that 3 or 4 bolts, an electrical connection and an drive belt tensioning adjustment.

    Hope that helps

I learned to swap out bits of the car just by doing ... the skill is knowing how to put it back if you get out your depth - a camera and notes are essential but Haynes is terrific (I did the head gasket as my first ever job just from Haynes!)

  • What tools and how do you change the alternator belt in a 1999 kia sephia?

It depends, if it has an 'auto-tensioner' (spring loaded pulley, hydraulic, etc), and usually a serpentine belt, you may just need a 3/8 or 1/2 ratchet/breaker bar. Just relieve the tension off the belt, slip off and slip new one on.

If it has V-belts then they are individually tensioned. Which you would have to adjust tension yourself. But be careful about not over tightening the belt, otherwise ruined bearings would result.

a craftsman tool kit will suffice.
What tools and how do you change the alternator belt in a 1999 kia sephia?
if u have to ask then maybe u shud just skip the questions and go to a mechanic, just a thought.
What tools and how do you change the alternator belt in a 1999 kia sephia?
Use a socket driver and a pipe over the handle. This way you have leverage to turn the auto tensioner. Then remove the belt and install a new serpantine belt around the same way the old one comes off. Just lift the belt off with one hand while holding the tensioner open. This is pretty much the same on any car from the 80's 90's and newer.
You should not need any really. There is a pulley that has a spring tension and to relieve the tension you can use a broom stick in a pinch.

Look on the front under the hood there will be a little picture of how the belt goes around the round pulleys.

    Its really pretty simple.

Me, I would replace the belt and on the last pulley (the alt or a/c compressor) I would use a screw driver to help get it about half on .....then I would turn the motor over a bit and it will POP into place like Magic!

MY DURANGO 2005 GAGES LIGHTS KEEP FLICKERING. I CHANGED ALTERNATOR WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE?

I'VE HAD THIS DURANGO FOR ONLY 1 YEAR NOW. IT IS A 2005 I'VE ALREADY SPENT $2000 ON BRAKES AND TIRES AND AN ALTERNATOR. MY GAGES ARE FLICKERING AND MY RADIO SOMETIMES DOES AS WELL. SOMEONE TOLD ME IT WAS MY ALTERNATOR; SO I CHANGED THAT AND IT STILL DOES IT. NOW MY AC IS BARELY BLOWING OUT. I INCREASE IT TO 5 BUT STAYS AT ONE SPEED. IT DOESN'T BLOW OUT AT ALL IF I PUT IT ON THE INSIDE CIRCULATION AND IT DOESN'T COME OUT AT ALL. WHAT COULD EVERYTHING BE???
MY DURANGO 2005 GAGES LIGHTS KEEP FLICKERING. I CHANGED ALTERNATOR WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE?
you have a lose batt cable or a lose ground some where

all so if you have a big amp for subs that will make you lights dim
MY DURANGO 2005 GAGES LIGHTS KEEP FLICKERING. I CHANGED ALTERNATOR WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE?
First of all, if you were charged $2000.00 for the alternator and tires, you got hosed. Now, take the thing to an auto electric shop. Not to a regular garage. A regular shop will %26quot;guess%26quot; you to death. An Auto electric shop will find and fix the problem. You might also want to check for bulletins on this car. Any shop can do this for you. Or do it yourself on line. You will find it by typing in 2005 Dodge Durango service bulletins. (It is more than likely a chassis ground for the interior electrical system.) A bundle of black wires with an eyelet type ground connector. It will be either grounded to the engine or body (metal) or chassis. If it were the battery ground, the car would not start. Good luck.

Do i need to change alternator with a 2600 watt amp?

I Have a hifonics Brutus 2600 watt amp and two 12 inch alpine type X's. My question is that I have been hearing two different things regarding this. One shop tells me yes i need a different battery, alternator, and a custom built box because these subs will blow the wood apart? The other tells me no just a thick wood box and a 20 farad capacitor.

I am very confused on what i should do and I don't want to install it the wrong way and have my alternator fail . . HELP!
Do i need to change alternator with a 2600 watt amp?
Do you have it all in now? Are the lights dimming? or are you planning to get this gear installed? a high output alternater is nice...but may be expensive. Replacing the battery might be a better alternative and a decent cap. But the other major thing to think about is the Wiring. This upgrade is cheaper...especially if you can do it yourself. Also people refer to this upgrade as the %26quot;Big three%26quot;.

    http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/foru鈥?/a>

Which is very important. I'll tell you what I've got in my system...and just have the stock Alternator of a Honda Element which only puts out 105amps. My system consists of a PHoenix Gold Ti 900.7 amp, for my 5%26quot; Phoenix Gold Component sets (2x each....so 4 5%26quot; and 4 tweeters ) also running a pair of Phoenix Gold Ti 9%26quot; midrange woofers in my doors.

I am also running an Autotek Mean Machine 3000.1 amp. which is running a Fi BTL 12%26quot; Sub fully loaded 3rd magnet, cooling etc.

I have upgraded the big three and have replaced the crappy factory battery with a Yellowtop Optima. No dimming lights. I hit about....148db on a TL Meter....

Oh ya and also running a Phoenix Gold 15 Farad cap...but Capacitors are SOMETIMES overrated.

The X Subs are supposed to be pretty powerful...I've never heard/seen one in action, so I couldnt tell ya but ya a prefabricated box may not be powerful enough to hold your subs if they are extremely heavy and you put a lot of power through it. You need to make sure the box is not cheap. For any sub really. cept the cheapy subs...hehe...the better built the box, usually the better the sound. But it all has to do with the specifications of the sub and materials used as well as how it's built. I dont think the 20 farad cap by itself will help you out. I am surprised the shops have not said that you need the big three upgraded...unless this has been done already.

So in my case I didnt need to upgrade my alternator...I am running HIGH POWERFUL amps and a booming sub...high end sub.

Depending on your car you might need to upgrade the alt...but I'd suggest big three first and battery. If that doesnt help then try the capacitor...if that doesnt work then alternator. Alternator is the expensive of the upgrades...and you may have a hard time finding replacement alternators for your car....depending on the car you have.

I dont really have a choice either on alternators...Element's not a very popular car for alternator manufacturers...hehe.

Do i need to change alternator with a 2600 watt amp?
i have the same amp and i use to have the same subs connected to it, your headlights will definateley dim. if you dont plan on pushing the amp to its limits, (5000watts or so it says), then you should be fine with upgrading the %26quot;big three%26quot; wires and getting a deep cycle battery, never get a cap, they are completely worthless, as for the box 3/4%26quot; MDF is strong enough, both those shops are just trying to rip you off by selling you a cap that does nothing or a custom box thats really just a regular box.

if you still need more power get a 150 to 200 amp alternator.(last resort)
I would get a high current alternator. to keep it safe you need the full power of your headlights to drive around, it would suck if your driving around with your loud music and get into a wreck because your headlights cut off all of the sudden. keep it safe.

(Alternator is %26quot;Under%26quot; not %26quot;Over%26quot; its on driver side, RWD car)

    Thanks!
Is 2 Hours Labor to change an Alternator and Wire it up CORRECTLY a good Rate?
That is a good rate, and a fair number of hours.

Make sure the alternator itself is the correct part and is not over-priced.

I replaced my own Bosch alternator on my 1998 Volvo V70, and this took me 4-5 hours all told. I am not a professional mechanic, but I could tell from what was involved (including removing/replacing the auxiliary belt) that this is NOT a one hour job. 2 hours is more than fair; they could probably charge you 3 even, depending on the car. (Volvo was going to charge me 2-3).

If the alternator is buried, you're getting a good price given all that needs to be removed and replaced.

    Good luck!

  • Changed Alternator now no lights?

I have a 87 nissan sentra the alternator was bad had it tested in car and then once I pulled it. Hooked new one back up and first thing I noticed was dash lights went out, then came back on when I reved it. Tightened the belt up cause it was slipping a bit, lights came on then went out and haven't came on since? Radio not working either that when out when the lights went. Anyone have any incline as to what it could be?
    Changed Alternator now no lights?
You have an electrical issue somehwere. If the alternator were bad, the battery would have taken up the load but it isnt, I would be inclined to check the fuseable link.
    Changed Alternator now no lights?
sounds like you may have a short under the dash. have you checked the fuses. just changing the alt wont knock out the light or radio.
The alternator wouldn't cause that to happen, however if you let the wire running to the alternator hit the motor or something on he metal frame of the veicle it would cause a fuse to blow, so be sure to check all of the fuses, you might have to fuse boxs ,one under the hood %26amp; another one under the dash or inside of the clove box.
Rebuilt alts are relatively often no good. Also have your battery tested.

    Alternator Change on Powerstroke?

A basic question on changing out the alternator on a 7.3 liter powerstroke engine. I've got a 1999 Ford F-250 and I want to pull the alternator to test it. I've given it a quick glance and it looks like pulling the unit is pretty straighforward and on top (versus hard to reach). However, in order to loosen the serpentine belt, where is the adjustment (tension) pulley? I don't want to turn more bolts than I need to....thanks in advance
    Alternator Change on Powerstroke?
The last answer raises a good point - most charging problems can be tested without removing parts. If you do want (or need) to remove the alternator, get a breaker bar with a 1/2 inch drive, seat it securely into the tensioner opening, and get a helper to hold it with 2 hands to loosen the belt. Remove the serpentine belt from the alternator pulley and leave it hanging in place - it will make it a lot easier to re-install if you don't completlely remove it. Taking a couple photos of the belt in place is a good idea if you have to remove or replace it, they can be tough to figure out unless you have a diagram.
    Alternator Change on Powerstroke?
Mine is a '94, tensioner is located between the alternator and power steering pump, the belt runs underneath the tensioner. I use a fairly long bar, it takes considerable force to push it up.
Look for the pulley bracket with a 1/2%26quot; drive square in it. Use a breaker bar to pry it back to release tension on the belt.
Take it to a shop, they can test the charging system without a turn of a wrench !!
jac 1067 is correct.... actually if the truck was never wrecked, there should be a sticker on the radiator support or the hood that tells the size of the ratchet head and the direction you need to turn it in to release the belt.

How to change alternator for a 2002 Pt Cruiser?

We are having problems with our pt starting. My boyfriend has talked to a mechanic and it looks like it is the alternator but the mechanic needs the alternator to test it. Well our car is stuck at the house and doesnt start so my boyfriend is trying to take off alternator himself. It has been hard for him since the alternator is buried deep under all kinds of stuff so he thought it would be easier to get to it by going under the car. Even that has been a task to get it out. is there and easier way to get that alternator out? Help!
How to change alternator for a 2002 Pt Cruiser?
    Charging the battery might be the easiest if you can. Otherwise, to take out the Alternator, the way to do that is through the passenger side wheel well. You can find instructions with pictures by going here;

    http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairG鈥?/a>

and enter your year, make, model and engine. (if you don't know which you have, it doesn't really matter) Then click the link for %26quot;Engine Electrical%26quot;, and it's the first section that pops up. You can click on the pictures to enlarge them.

Navigate back to the %26quot;Steering%26amp;suspension%26quot; section for help with the lower control arm. Like I said, a lot easier to just charge the battery and drive it to the mechanic if you can.
How to change alternator for a 2002 Pt Cruiser?
Easiest is to charge the battery -you can do this with jumper cables and a running car. Then crank the Petey up. If will now run to Florida if you do not run radio, heater, lights etc. Drive it to mechanic and let him check it out and fix it.
The PT utilizes a generator. I would recommend that you use a service guide if you attempt this procedure. It contains numerous illustrations and instructions for the sub procedures mentioned below.

I recently changed the alternator and battery on my 95 dodge ram 2500.the battery continues to go dead ?
I had this problem with a car of mine. It turned out that there was a computer module in the car that went bad, %26amp; kept draining the battery.
I recently changed the alternator and battery on my 95 dodge ram 2500.the battery continues to go dead ?
you might have a Short some ware in the car.
check the wiring from the alternator to the battery it could be bad or corroded
    wiring?
if it is still going dead there is something, somewhere that is taking it down. aftermarket cd player, anything that is not stock on the car could do it.

or a ground could be touching somewhere.

you know the alternator is charging while its running, cause it reads 12 volts, but just to make sure, take a tester straight to the battery to see what it reads then. you only have about 30 minutes on a battery if the alternator is not charging, if you can leave it running for that amount of time, your alternator is doing what it is supposed to. but i would think that something is pulling your battery down that you don't know about.

But if you can get in contact with me, I would like to know what the problem is.
have someone do a draw check on it,that will show up any drainage on the battery and allow you to start checking things to find out whats draining the battery, with all it being new it probably has a small draw on the battery causing this too happen,a good 12 volt test light will help you do a draw test on it then you,ll know, good luck.
If your only showing 12 volts while it's running then it's not charging, you should read at least 13.5 volts on a volt meter while it's running, 12 when it's cut off.

Changed alternator now my ac compressor doesn't work? 95 maxima?

Hi, recently I got my alternator changed and now my ac compressor doesn't work. I noticed a wire dangling under my car which was from the compressor I bring it back they told me they disconnected it when they did the alternator job so they reconnected it and told me it should work since I got there late when they were closing I had to leave. But it still don't work could I of messed up something whe I turned the ac on the other day and it wasn't connected . Please respond back on any ideas..
Changed alternator now my ac compressor doesn't work? 95 maxima?
I don't know what the problem could be. But I wouldn't use that shop again. I don't see how they could screw up the ac replacing the alternator, sounds like sub par mechanic work to me.
Changed alternator now my ac compressor doesn't work? 95 maxima?
That is probably for the compressor clutch. There is no way you damaged anything when you turned it on while it was disconnected. I would ask them to check their work. Maybe the belt on the AC compressor is loose or maybe the connector (wire you saw) was damaged when they were prying on things to tighten the alternator belt.

Is it harder to change an alternator in a 1986 Toyota Van than in a 1986 Toyota truck?
I don't know about the van, but the truck is really simple. On my 1989 toyota pickup the alternator is right on top. There is one bolt that the alternator pivots on and another bolt that slips in a groove. The pivot/groove are so the alternator can be pulled away from the engine to tighten the belt. Unplug the wiring harness, remove both bolts, bolt up the new alternator and plug it in. The hardest part may be holding the alternator tight against the belt while tightening the bolts. My dad has a 1986 toyota and I believe the 86 and 89 are identical under the hood.

How do i change the alternator belt on a 1992 chry. lebarron if I don't have the schematics on the front end?

What size engine does it have? If it is the V6 then it will have a serpentine belt and look like a capital letter %26quot;A%26quot; with the %26quot;legs%26quot; going around the power steering pump and crank pulley. The middle will go up and around the tensioner pulley

i own a shop, and if the old one is still on it, draw a diagram of it,that's the best way to do it,then you,ll remember it the next time, good luck.
Go to the parts store and buy a haynes or chilton's manual for your car. You will thank yourself over and over again. Or if you don't have the 20 dollars call them and ask if they can look it up for you.
I don't know if the belt routing on this illustration would be the same as the routing on your vehicle but it's worth a look. http://autorepair.about.com/library/pict鈥?/a> ...Good Luck...

How do I change my alternator on a 94 chevy astro can?

Get the intake plenum and filter contraption out of the way, disconnect battery, get your metric tools out, and have at it. You have to reach into tiny places.

  • How does the maintenance differ on a BMW than on a Ford or GM?

I want to buy a 1997 BMW 318i but I am a home mechanic and have no trouble working on my Ford's or GM's. I am wondering what the difference is and if i could work on my own BMW. I don't want to do any major motor work just the basics. Example: Starter, Oil changes, Alternator, Tune up. What are some of the differences or obsticals i can come to expect. Is it an easy transition?
How does the maintenance differ on a BMW than on a Ford or GM?
there really isn't much difference in things like this ,the BMW may cost you less ,because parts seem to last longer on them, oil changes aren't any more, lube jobs aren't either, for the most part of it one wont cost much more than a regular car, prices of parts are high right now for any car made, these just cost a little more that's all,but they also last a lot longer,so in the long run you may come out cheaper,a lot of people have, those are good cars, but like any other car made they do need maintenance work once in a while,it wont break you up though, good luck with it.
How does the maintenance differ on a BMW than on a Ford or GM?
no, BMW's are a major pain and expensive. You need a lot of specific knowledge and tools to do even the most basic of repairs. They are not at all user friendly and very expensive to replace any parts. That old a car even in good shape in a money drain. BEWARE!!!!
The biggest thing I see is price, it's a BMW parts are more expensive regardless if you can get shop price.

Some things are easier than others because of setup. The BMW is a lil more cramed area to work with, kinda like a ford to a honda, amount of space to work with.

I believe the BMW is more computer controlled compared to the domestics and the tools needed, you might need a couple of the specialty tools for that particular vehicle.

That's really about it, you will just have to open the hood and see, it shouldn't be a hard transition, but get the shop manual if you can, I believe if you know how to use torrents you will be able to find it no problem.
all i can tell you is that compared to your other cars the BMW parts will be damn expensive ya know gotta send the parts from Germany other than that i don't really think there is much of a difference

What is the best way to remove and change the alternator from a 2001 ford focus es wagon? Thanks for solutions!?

While i have encountered cars where the procedure is more involved, usually it goes like this.

Remove the belt, to remove the belt, you find the belt tensioner, and bend it back so it no longer is pulling the belt tight, (the belt tentioner is basically a small spring loaded arm, with a pully at the end, that using the force of the spring will pull the belt tight around all of the pulleys) with the belt loose, you can remove it by hand from the maze of pulleys. Sometimes there is a square hole in the belt tensioner that is meant to accept a 1/2 inch drive ratchet, and other times there is a hex nut that you put a socket on to twist the entire tensioner arm.

With the belt removed, you can simply unbolt the alternator, and re bolt the new one, you will of course have to unplug and replace a single wiring clip from it also.

Once the new alternator is bolted on, you can snake the belt around all the other pulleys the way it should go save the belt tensioner pulley, holding th belt in one hand, and opening the belt tensioner with a tool using the other arm, slip the belt back onto the last pully.

Lastly plug back in the wiring clip to your alternator, close the hood, and your done, alternator accomplished

Anyone know how to make the plug stay in a alternator if the plug is broke?
sounds so simple....i've done something similar...if you don't have money for, or just can't find another plug, try....Electrical tape, the black stretchy stuff..it will wrap around and stretch tight to hold the little plug end in place

My simple repair has lasted for years...hope it works
Anyone know how to make the plug stay in a alternator if the plug is broke?
    go get another plug.

    and solder it in.......

do it the right way once!

and never have to do it again
Above post is correct. Buy a new end plug, they're cheap enough. Put about 5 minutes of labour into it and you won't have to worry about it again.
you can replace the plug on it most parts stores carry these on their help line of automotive parts, that's a common problem for those to break off,you might be able to use some sort of glue or silicone on it but it would be just as easy to replace it and be done with it,this way you don't have to worry about it coming off, good luck on it,
