Buy a haynes manual, it will give you step by step instructions, alternators aren't cheap, they can be got from ebay, but parts usually aren't too expensive from Ford main dealers, I usually go to ford myself, at least if theres a problem it's easily returned.

if you cant get a workshop manual form a library you can get a Haynes from Halfords. this will show you how .it is fiddly but easily doable. just take care with battery and wire connections. !!

I am surprised a failed alternator isn't allowing it to start ? but it may be a dead short and flattening the battery ( diode failure) You will have to jump start it but if battery itself is now dead this can become a problem as a dead battery can affect starting by dropping voltage too much etc and acting as a power restrictor in circuit thus not enough voltage to crank engine even when revving the engine on supplying car.

these units are expensive sadly but rarely fail and are not a home repair item.
