How much should it cost to replace an alternator?

I have a corsa 2005. Last night all electrics died and today the AA recovery man took it to the garage and told them to change the alternator and check my battery. I did Not get a quote, being so far from home all I wanted to do was get back. They should start the work tomorrow. I really hope I don't get ripped off. Can anyone give me a ruff idea of what I'd expect to pay in the U.K

How do I change the alternator on a 1989 Nissan Maxima?

How difficult is it? What special tools, steps are needed? I will be doing it myself, even though I am no mechanic.

changing an alternator is pretty easy depending on where its located in your car, (cant remember if anything is in the way on that year) its really only a few bolts with my experience.. the annoying part is if you have to move anything to get to those bolts. youll need a ratchet and socket sized for your bolts. and really thats all.

its not that bad just a few bolts and the wiring it want take to long and a few wrenches

How do I change the alternator on a 1998 Dodge Neon?

If you have any diagrams or websites with diagrams, it would be greatly appreciated.

Its actually kinda a pain to change. First disconnect the battery from the car, just the cables. Then you need to remove the AC and power steering belts(real easy, just release pressure on the idler pulley and remove the belt) then loosen the alternator tensioning screw and that belt should be able to come off. Now when I replaced a alternator on a neon, I had the car on ramps to be able to work underneith. Then I actually jacked the car up to release weight on the front suspension, the suspension and steering components get in the way to remove the alternator. Now remove the bottom bolt holding the alternator in, remove the positive conductor cable and the other wire clip. The alternator will come out now, just move it around till it drops out.

You should get a manual too.. $15 and its worth it. Another place to look is www.neons.org they may have a how to..

Go to pep boys and look through the manuals, casually take notes , if you don't want to buy the manual, plus you'll need some tools
ask auto-zone or advanced auto they will have the diagrams, the new alt will have the directions too

  • My 87 Camaro is charging too much, and this is the 3rd alternator?

The Camaro charges too much and it shuts everything off in the cab. I have changed the alternator a couple times and it keeps doing it. Any suggestions?
My 87 Camaro is charging too much, and this is the 3rd alternator?
this alternator should have a flat two-prong plug, the wire that is hot all the time is the sense wire, if you have low voltage there it will cause the regulator to think that the battery is low and make the alt overcharge, a similar result will happen if you have a problem on the main battery wire, due to either a bad connection or fusible link problem.

you can isolate the problem by adding a helper wire from the battery positive terminal to the sense wire, and then from the battery positive to the alternator output terminal, if either helper wire makes the alt stop overcharging then you know where the problem is and you can look closer for a bad connection or damaged wire, or just replace the bad wire altogether.

Where did you get the alternator? Only buy AC/Delco

    Disconnect the Negative battery cable.

Loosen the pivot and slot bolts on the alternator, and remove the belt.

Remove the bolts the rest of the way, then remove the wires from the alternator. Or remove the wires first, if you can get at them.

    Install in reverse order.

Does anyone know how to change an Alternator belt for a 1998 Rav4?

I'm at work and my 1998 Rav4's alternator belt just snapped when i got back from lunch. I purchased the belt already but I'm not quite sure how to replace it. I was told there is a Tensioner pulley somewhere that I can turn to release some tension but I'm not sure which one it is. If you have a how-to or diagram or any information please help. Thanks
Does anyone know how to change an Alternator belt for a 1998 Rav4?
Theyre not hard to replace but you are going to need a wrench to retract the belt tensioner. There is a diagram usually under your hood for the belt route. but the tensioner pulls back off the the belt so there is slack on the belt so you can pull out the old one and slip in the new one being sure to follow the same route as the old one. The only problem is your going to have to get yourself a wrench to do this.

    heres a pic of one

Does anyone know how to change an Alternator belt for a 1998 Rav4?
It requires a serpentine belt tool. first take note of the routing of the belt, raise the car up and remove the shield covering the crank pulley, put a 19mm socket on the tool, find the tensioner toward the top of the engine, put the tool on the fixed tensioner casting (its a 19mm hex cast right into the tensioner) (do this from the bottom) and pull down. this will take the tension off the belt and allow you to slip the belt off the waterpump pulley. let the bar go back up and the whole belt will fall off. replacing is reverse, its tricky the first time......even the second or third. good luck! oh and dont try to drive it to the repair shop if you cant get it back on.....the waterpump wont be working so you'll risk engine damage by overheating, the power steering wont work, the battery wont charge, and as if it matters...the A/C wont work either!
