Is it harder to change an alternator in a 1986 Toyota Van than in a 1986 Toyota truck?
I don't know about the van, but the truck is really simple. On my 1989 toyota pickup the alternator is right on top. There is one bolt that the alternator pivots on and another bolt that slips in a groove. The pivot/groove are so the alternator can be pulled away from the engine to tighten the belt. Unplug the wiring harness, remove both bolts, bolt up the new alternator and plug it in. The hardest part may be holding the alternator tight against the belt while tightening the bolts. My dad has a 1986 toyota and I believe the 86 and 89 are identical under the hood.
