I need help changing an Alternator in a '96 Chevy Cavalier.?

I need to change alternator%26#039;s on a 1996 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L w/air. Is there a belt tensioner or something that needs to be loosened when taking the old alternator off? On some older cars, the alternator was on a pivot - but this one seems to just hard bolt on it two places. Is there something I%26#039;m missing?|||There is a tensioner.

In Fig 1. The guy has right hand on a wrench that is releasing the tension on the tensioner pully to allow you to remove the belt.|||You%26#039;re in luck. I just replaced my buddys about 2 weeks ago. If I remembe right you just have to take the bolts loose. There should be a tensioner near the rear of the engine down low, and if you can%26#039;t locate it, look for the sticker that shows where the belt goes.

Serpintine belts suck!|||I%26#039;m not positive in your case, but most modern serpentine belt systems have a tensioner pulley. You can usually figure out which one it is by the size of it, since they are usually small. Also, it won%26#039;t be driving anything like a power steering pump or water pump, so there will be nothing behind it. When you find it, use a socket and ratchet to hook onto the nut on the front to pull the tension off the belt so you can pull it off. They are on a pivot, so it will swing out of the way. Good luck.|||It probably has a tension pulley. Check the belt pattern diagram pic on the front of the engine compartment or in the owners manual. The tension pulley will be spring loaded and have a hole for a 3/8 breaker bar or ratchet so you can release the tension and take the belt off. With the belt off the alternator you can replace the alternator release the tension again put the belt back on and reapply the tension.|||make sur e loosen one end pull the hole bolt out that the altinator is pivoting on pull the bolt to you stick u block of wood under to shimmy bolt out towards radiator
