Go to your local car audio store. They will have a coil or something for that. It stores up energy to use at peek wattage. this will alleviate your problem. This device stores up energy for when your speakers hit peek wattage and releases it when needed so it does not steal it from your engine or cause you to stall.

how about you shut the car off and save up to replace the alternator. nothing else will work, aside from a solar panel.

capacitor, if you put another battery thats just something else for the alternator to have to charge.

a capacitor is like a battery in some ways anyway and you'll have a much easier time finding a place to put it than a big battery.

Get a battery, a capacitor doesn't give it any more charge, as it only takes what the rest of the car can give. which dies after the first hit anyways. A yellow top-battery should solve your problems. Enjoy!
If the load draws more amperage then your alt can put out, you will be fighting a losing battle, even if you added 30 batteries....I would re-think the alternator...

I have changed my alternator an the battery light stays on when i start the car and the abs lights stays on?

First, does the alternator you put in work? ABS is a whole different system, and should be diagnosed separately. More information is available if you give us YEAR, MAKE, MODEL.

Do a scan check and see if any codes . Check for blown fuses too.

You can also try disconnecting the battery to reset it.

honestly an alternator on a maxima can be a little tricky. if you go to www.autozone.com you can look at step by step instructions.

Changing oil and spilled some on my alternator, will that hurt it?

I was changing my oil and was wondering if its bad for your car to change the oil while its still hot, like immediately after shutting it off?

Also I used a funnel but it kind of tipped to the side a bit causing a considerable amount of oil to spill on my valve cover and into alternator, you think thats going to hurt the alternator?
Changing oil and spilled some on my alternator, will that hurt it?
The very best chemical to remove grease is any cheap carburetor cleaner followed with CRC Brake Clean. The brake clean will remove any remaining scum or residue the carb. cleaner missed. It's best to do this with the motor run so the commutator and brushes inside the alternator get clean as well as the field windings.
Changing oil and spilled some on my alternator, will that hurt it?
It shouldn't as long as it was not a whole lot. try some orange Brit engine degreaser.
no when the motor gets hot it will burn off
No!, do not use a degreaser on the alternator, the copper windings are coated in a petroleum based coating, you will be fine. Wipe up as much of the spilled oil as you can with a rag. The rest of the oil will drip or burn off. It will smell for a while and you will see smoke, but you will be ok. and to answer your other question, it is ok to change your oil hot. it is actually preferred so the oil will drain from the crankcase better and faster. rest easy that you are ok.... have a good evening. How to change an alternator, or starter?

I have a 2005 Nissan Frontier 2.5 liter 4 cyl. We replaced the battery and it still won't crank. Just wanna know how to change the alternator or starter, and what the prices are to replace them. If anything, i'll take it to the shop, but I used to be a mechanic back in my 20's so I just wanted to find out what I may have to do.
How to change an alternator, or starter?
Wow, how old are you that they didn't have starters when you were in your 20's? LOL

Seriously though, if it wouldn't crank over with a new battery, you don't need an alternator. Check both your battery cables at both ends. Or, if it's not making any noise at all, make sure you're getting power to your starter solenoid when you turn the ignition key to %26quot;start%26quot;. If you need a starter, remove negative cable from battery, remove wires from starter, remove starter from engine. Reverse to install. Most auto parts stores will test your starter for free if you bring it in (bench test), to be sure that's it.
How to change an alternator, or starter?
Check the starter and ignition relays. Also make sure the battery is good. Make sure the car has good ground as well.
This is no joke, but give the starter a light tap with a hammer to free the starter selonoid that is sticking...

  • I just changed my alternator, but my car wont start, when i jump it it stays on for a minute.?

when i remove the battery terminal it cuts off. do you think its the alternator or my battery
I just changed my alternator, but my car wont start, when i jump it it stays on for a minute.?
you can buy a new bad alternator take it back to where you got it have it checked if bad get another but have it checked before you leave the store this time
I just changed my alternator, but my car wont start, when i jump it it stays on for a minute.?
you can pull the altenator and battery and auto zone or checker will check it for free. You might also want to see if you can start it off the starter solenoid. take a long screw and a helper find the starter and there should be two bolt looking things with wires attrached off the solenoid touch the two together with the screwdriver while the helper turns the key.. be careful u will get a spark but it dont hurt you may also want to clean these connections. the solenoid or the starter may be the problem
well on older cars removing the cable would be a sign that the atlerantor is not working sure you have the wires right... and if its a newer model you can really fry the eletronic when you see that little spark jump when you take off the cable when the car is running doing more damage is a no no now you cant do it........ so if it runs drive it to any shop or auto zone and have it tested while its running they can tell you if its working or whats bad in five minutes or less so stop guessing
Usually if the car cuts off after you jump it and have removed the battery cable, it indicates that the alternator is bad. If the car keeps running after disconnecting the battery cable the battery is bad. It sounds counter-intuitive, but generally that's how you can distinguish which of the two parts are bad. Since you just replaced the alternator, maybe the alternator belt needs tightening. Did you take it for a good 30 minute drive after putting a new alternator on, or just let it sit there idling? If you didn't drive it long enough for the alternator to recharge the battery, it won't stay running long. I think you need to check the belt tension %26amp; take it for a good long drive. And how old is your battery? It could be just weak enough and old enough to no longer hold a good charge, even with a new alternator.
STOP PLAYING AND TAKE THE BATTERY TO A AUTO PART PLACE AND GET A NEW BATTERY.

TAKE THE OLD BATTERY IN AS THEY WILL CHARGE YOU TILL YOU HAVE THE BATTERY CORE AND THEY NEED TO SEE IT TO MAKE SURE IT IS THE RIGHT ONE AND GAS IS WHAT??

you wont need to change your timing belt

just incase your wondring if you have to change your alternator belt then no or if so the kit should come with a belt to replace it

1993 HONDA CIVIC! Will i need to change the timing belt when changing to a performance underdrive pulley?
if you don't know what the hell your doing don't **** with it.
You cant see the timing belt. Its behind the front cover. If you are referring to the drive belts, I would replace them if they are in need of changing. The timing belt is a bigger job, should be changed every 90k I believe every car differs though.
I have seldom worked on any hondas, however, the use of underdrive pulleys is old hat in hot rodding. You will undoubtably have to change length of your belt on an accessory drive, but I question your use of an underdrive pulley as being related to a timing belt. Unless both pulleys for crank and cam are changed, it would not be possible for them to stay in time, and changing them both would have no purpose as far as power gain. If I have misunderstood your question, please pardon my interuption. If you are changing an accessory drive that is actually driven from the timing belt(is that actually done on hondas?) then there may be a small change in length, all dependent upon difference of the two diameters and how many degrees of the pulley circle it contacts. Using pi (3.14) times change in diameter divided by the fraction of degrees contacting the pulley should give you the difference in length.
You shouldnt have to mess with the timing chain, but you will have to take off the accessory belts (A/C, power steering, alternator) when changing out the pulley. I would advise you to change the belts if it is necessary, but if your alternator is in working order then dont mess with it. Dont fix what isnt broken.
No you shouldnt have to unless it says so when you get the pulley, u should just need a new belt, they should provide it.
your timing belt replacement is an advanced project and you dont need to do it yourself (leave it to the pros). it is easy to change the pullies. just get or rent or find a clicker torq wrench. but it isnt needed. you should get a friend who will help. it will be more fun with an extra set of hands. it shouldnt take you very long and its a good upgrade. good luck and have fun! get any performance parts off the %26quot;bay%26quot; they will be half price...

My friends say that if you install subs and an amp in your car, your alternator will die. Is that true?

    subs=subwoofers

    amp=amplifier

If it will mess up my alternator, what can I do to prevent it from happening? Some say you need to change your alternator and get a new one before you install a stereo system. I have no idea what to do. I don't want to install a stereo system if it will mess up my car, but I want my car to have a lot of bass. Please give some great advice.
My friends say that if you install subs and an amp in your car, your alternator will die. Is that true?
Do your friends tell u B.S. often? what everyone else has said is pretty much true. unless ur goin big time, ur alt will be okay. now go find thoes friends and punch them in their stomachs. damn liars.
My friends say that if you install subs and an amp in your car, your alternator will die. Is that true?
There are two things that a strong amplifier and sub may affect. One is the battery and the other is the alternator. High end car audio installers usually sell high power batteries that can handle the drain from a high power sound system. Along with that, you need to be able to be able to keep the battery charged to the level necessary to run the system.

If you have several hundred RMS watts in your system, you might want to have your alternator/battery tested when you have your audio system at a level you listen, and throw in the A/C, too. See if your system is able to keep the battery charged. You may need to upgrade either the battery or the alternator...or both.
Make sure if you're running a big amp, or multiple amps, get a capacitor.

This definition will be in its simplest form. You will see audio capacitors referred to as Stiffening Capacitors. A capacitor is a devise that stores electrical energy. Well, you say that鈥檚 what a battery does. Well yes it does, but the difference is the ability and speed that this electrical energy is able to be discharged.

Batteries are designed to store electrical energy for long periods of time. A battery also discharges slowly. A capacitor charges and discharges very rapidly. The reason behind this is due to the internal resistance of both devices. A battery has a high resistance that allows for long-term energy storage and a slow discharge. The capacitor has virtually no internal resistance, which allows for rapid charges and discharges.

An amplifier requires current as music signal passes through it. This creates transient signals in the amplifier. The problem occurs when many of these signal come in rapid succession in a short period of time. The time we are talking about are very small fractions of a second (milliseconds). If your electrical system is unable to react to this it causes a sagging effect in the audio output.

As the current goes up, so must the voltage. Since you can鈥檛 increase the voltage as the current requirement increases we get a decrease in voltage and this decrease in voltage causes a sagging power supply. Amplifiers work best at 14.5 volts and can easily overcome a factory installed alternator current output capacity. When the engine is turned off, the system requirements are supplied by the battery increasing the problem of supplying the transient requirements. You could add 10 or 20 more batteries and it wouldn鈥檛 help. Remember, as explained above batteries can鈥檛 supply energy quickly enough to supply the transient needs of the amplifier. Please note that these transients may be 100 amps. They occur so fast that your fuse will not be effected, remember this takes place in milliseconds.

By adding a large stiffening capacitor to your amplifier input power line you should be able to meet these transient requirements. Remember as explained above, a capacitor can store energy very fast and discharge energy very fast. This should solve the transient current requirement to the amplifier.

The voltage of the capacitor can only be the same as the alternator output or if the engine is off, to the level of the battery. So, as you can see a capacitor doesn鈥檛 maintain battery levels. If you are still having energy shortages to operate your system you may need to look into a high output alternator
you don't have to get a new one if you aren't going to have vary high power any thing over 300rms i would get a cap any thing over 500rms an alternator that can put out more power.1000+rms a second battery with all of the stuff listed(cap, alternator)

    hope this helps
no, but you have to make sure that your alternator can recharge the battery and run the amp at the same time. because if your alternator is not putting out enough amperage to charge the battery and is being over drawn by the amp therefor not properly charging the battery. this scenario will in fact damage/burn out your alternator.

Note: if you plan on adding a stereo system, upgrade your alternator. this is necessary to power an amp of at least 1000 watts which will give you plenty of bass. but again your alternator needs to put out enough amperage to recharge the battery plus compensate for the power your drawing from it. if you have a high powered system and it is drawing the power from the battery faster than your alternator can recharge it, your battery will die, plus ruin your alternator.
no, unless you're installing some heavy duty stuff. go kick your friend in the head.
it'll put alot of stress on it. if it is big enough to put out enough power to handle them it'll be fine. but if it is too much, it could go bad over a while.
Something to consider...this is an example...

To calculate the current draw of an amplifier, multiply the number of channels by the RMS watts per channel (a 2 channel amp rated at 2000 watts RMS per channel would be 4000 watts). Double it to account for amplifier inefficiency (4000 watts X 2 = 8000 watts), then divide by the average output voltage of an alternator, 13.8 volts (8000 divided by 13.8 = 579 amps). Since the average music signal requires about 1/3rd of the average power in a test tone, divide by 3 (579 amps divided by 3 = 193 amps).

This is an average approximation of current draw and can go higher. So I would gather between 194 and 289 amperes for this example.

    The alternator of a:

compact car is about 35 amps

mid-sized car is about 65-75 amps

    SUV is about 145 amps

Calculate 40% of the amperes of the alternator you have now. This is the average current the car uses when running. Add this number to the approximate average current draw of the amps, and you will come up with the actual size of alternator you need.

If the number you come up with is the same as what your alternator supplies, you need to take no action.
    no
you should buy a new alternator or yes you will kill yours you can go to a car audio shop and they can help you out
it all depends on the size of your equipment, the bigger the amps, more power is needed to run them. so if u want to install the big system, get a higher powered alt.
Get a battery cap or two. You could even get a spare battery, or even a built up alternator.
no, it all bullshit. Unless you are going to put in like 8, 1000watt amps, you should be fine. There is a way to power the amps from an other battery source, or there is like a power distributor/converter to solve this problem. But if you just want bass, a simple (name brand) 10' sub, with a (name brand) 300-600 watt amp will give you more bass than you need. And it will NOT kill your altenator.
first of all, it wont kill you alternator, it may drain your battery or blow a fuse, thats why you have it installed by a pro, tell your buddy to learn more about hte electrical system of a car before he hands out bullshit
that is most certainly not definitley true. if you just have some subs and an amp and a decent 65 amp alternator youre fine

I just changed my alternator and now I have a very rough idle. What's up?

Ok, so my car (a 1999 Ford Mustang with 140K miles) started acting funny yesterday and the battery light came on. Eventually, it died. I had the battery and alternator replaced. A little later in the day I drove the car and now the idle is very low (less than 500 RPM). In fact, it even killed on me as I parked the car and when I had to make a slow turn. However, both times it killed I was able to start it back up easily. I called the %26quot;shade-tree mechanic%26quot; who I let fix it and he says the car's computer needs to be reset. What do you all think? Thanks in advance.
I just changed my alternator and now I have a very rough idle. What's up?
The computer has to relearn certain things. The dealerships have a certain procedure of reving up the engine, on and off cycles so the customers don't complain after they get the car back. All you need to do is drive it around a bit, it will relearn on it's own.
I just changed my alternator and now I have a very rough idle. What's up?
If you like sparks and ruined tools, remove the positive battery terminal.

If you're smart, remove the negative battery terminal instead. (won't short out if you touch the body/frame.

Let it sit for a couple minutes. Then hook it back up.

Look around for a vacuum hose that may have been unplugged from the engine and is sucking raw air.
Sounds like he is right. A lot of times the idle has to be reset when the battery goes dead.
sometimes ive noticed it you tigten the belt to tight for the altenator it strains sometimes leading to low idle well at least it has happend with my mitsubishi
    Timing?
well it could be the starter, have u checkrd that?!
Thank you knowItAll for sighting that mistake, you never remove the positive battery cable when you do a check or maintenance for this exact reason, a short can heat a socket wrench yellow hot in seconds and can explode and kill you. Always remove the negative cable to reset the ECM. Also yes you need to check your engine for vacuum leaks because this is a really common cause for this kind of problem the ECM does nothing with the alternator (other then draw power) so this would not be the first place I would look for problems. If all fo yoru vacuum lines are ok, try checking to make sure your IAC is working properly if the IAC is bad and closed shut, when you lift off the gas, say to make a turn or to come to a stop the engine starves and stalls. This is insanely common with the Ford 3.8L V6
Yah just reset the comp. Thats easy to do. Just disconnect the Red part of your battery and leave it off for a few minutes. GO back and reinstall it and you should be good.

Ok! I changed alternator. Sys is charging battery is @ correct amps... why would idiot light stay on. ???
Not alot of info to go on, but I'm gonna use the SWAG method on this. (Scientific Wild A$$ Guess.) You have a newer car. You did all the work yourself. You didn't use a manual since an alternator is a simple swap. Here goes!

You didn't have the tool to reset the trouble code in the computer.

Alternator knows it's OK. Battery knows it's OK. Puny little computer mind in your car still is having fits. No one told %26quot;IT%26quot; that all is OK now. Most times it's just something you plug into the harness under the dash or in the engine compartment. Resets the computers little brain so it don't worry anymore. Hope that does it for ya'. Ciao!
Ok! I changed alternator. Sys is charging battery is @ correct amps... why would idiot light stay on. ???
What was the batteries voltage when you changed out the alternator? If it was very low, it'd do that idiot light for a bit too. If not, then most likely is a bad wire in the plug in connector. Have someone wiggle them wires till the light goes out. Then note that wire, and fix it. Good luck.
i own a repair shop, and it would have helped if you had given more info on the car, usually if the idiot light is on it means there is still a charging problem with it so if it keeps doing it,you might have to have it checked out real good to see what the problem is ,,good luck i hope this help,s.,,check all the cables real good on it.

When to change alternator and compressor belts?

    Dear All,

I'm about to go about changing my timing belt on my FTO as it has already done 102K before I bought it and the owner didn't previously changed it.

Do you think it would be a good idea to change the water pump and the various belts at the same time?

The quote for the timing belt is already around $1000, which is very costly as the reason is that it is an imported car, ouch!

I need to replace a new radiator to the car which is another about $500.

So what should I choose to add on?

    Thanks.
When to change alternator and compressor belts?
all of the belts have to come off when you change a timing belt. change what ever the manuel says and you'll get another 100,000 miles.
When to change alternator and compressor belts?
It would be a good idea to change all the belts while they're off. An honest shop wouldn't charge any labor to do those because they have to come off during the timing belt job anyway. Each belt should cost no more than $50.

The water pump should always be replaced with a timing belt job. Let's say you passed on replacing the water pump. If it goes out 2 months later, you'll be paying for a timing belt job all over again because it has to come off in order to replace the pump.

Timing belt tensioner, tensioner bearing, idler bearing (if any), front main seal, cam seals and it's not a bad idea to replace the thermostat at the same time. These are all wear items that will require removal of the timig belt if they eventually fail. Most shops will miss at least half of this in an effort to be able to present you with a lower price than the competition. Make sure you call at least 3 shops for prices. Make sure they're quote includes all the items listed. Make sure they're only using OEM parts (aftermarket accessory belts are okay, though). If you allow a shop to use aftermarket, they will more than likely source the cheapest timing belt kit they can get their hands on. Timing belt related items are critical. One slip can translate to thousands in damage.
um if its your timing belt do it as the manuel says if its your other belts check for cracks look at it with a flash light also the alternator last for quite a long time is its working fine leave as is same with your water pump if your car has good heater power than its good but you should do a master tune up which is change Spark plug cables engine oil tranny oil and change fuel filters if it has a rear diff change the oil in it too ummm about the radiator its not that hard to change believe me don't wast your money timing belt try other places that's too much what your gana pay try kragen auto parts, auto zone, pepboys and napa if you need more advice hit me up i can help so i tink..

There will be at least two bolts that hold the alternator. One is the pivot bolt at the bottom of the alternator and the other is the tension adjust bolt. You must have the proper wrenches and someone to hold the alternator in position while you tighten the bolts. See http://www.haynes.com for a repair manual.

I am trying to change my alternator but I cant figure out how to loosen the belt.
How to loosen an Alternator Belt on a 1991 Chevy Corsica?
There is a tensioner. It looks like an arm with a smooth pulley on it that does not look to serve any purpose. Put a wrench on the nut on the tensioner and push to the right it is basically a big spring.

    Good luck
How to loosen an Alternator Belt on a 1991 Chevy Corsica?
there is a belt tensioner all you need to do is rent the serpentine belt tool its a long rod and you can have it on an angle to loosen it up enough and have someone take the belt off or just stick a 3/8 rachet down there to listen it up and it should be easy enough to lift up and take it off
Every car has a tensioner. Look at all the pulleys on the belt it should be a smaller one with hole in the middle. If you take a 3/8 inch ratchet it should fit in that hole. You push that down with a lot of pressure and you'll see the belt loosen on the rest of the pulleys. Sometimes it takes two people as you have to push down really hard for some cars and while you push down the other person has to slide the belt off the pulleys. Good luck

If the old belt looks like crap then change it. While you are at the parts store you can look at one of the repair manuals on the shelf. Before you put on the new belt make sure you spin all the pulley wheels so you know that one of them isn't binding up.

Why the he-- didnt you draw a diagram??
Help, Im in the middle of repairing my 1994 escort in the rain, changed the alternator now belt squeaks?
Replace the belt and check alignment of tensioner too.
Make sure you have the belt tight enough if that doesnt fix it the while its running carefully rub a bar of soap or a candle on the side that touches the pullys.
remember the flat backside off the belt, will run against smooth or flat surface idler pulleys. the tension of the idler pulley should be against the back side of the belt, and pushing down against it. also you have have gotten a little grease or such on the belt, and its trying to slip a little. car washing it will take care of that, but check your belt makes sure it is not fraid or has cracks internally, it may need replaced also.

I need instructions on how to change an alternator on a 1993 Chrysler fifth avenue?

pull off belt, remove wires, unbolt alternator, replace in reverse order :)
I need instructions on how to change an alternator on a 1993 Chrysler fifth avenue?
Disconnect battery cable, and electrical connectors from alternator, loosen alternator adjustment, pivot and lock bolts. then detach the drivebelt. Remove adjustment and lock bolts from alternators adjustment bracket. Take alternator out. When replacing the alternator with a new one make sure it matches the old one. Also make sure it has a pully, if not you can either use the old pully, or sometimes shops will put one in for you free of charge. Then just place the new alternator how you removed the old one.

Can an alternator change blow out a car battery or visa-versa.

Basically my battery died in my 89 Caddy El Dorado. Took it to sears and they replaced the battery and alternator cause it was bad. But to my dismay the digital dashboard no longer lights up any of it. After plenty of arguing no mechanic can fix it, but they have been trying to fix it mechanically. Does anybody no if i replace or take out and put back in the alternator if the dash will light again?
Can an alternator change blow out a car battery or visa-versa.
an alternator can take out a battery but not vice versa. Check your fuses.
Can an alternator change blow out a car battery or visa-versa.
They more than likely blew the fuse that lights your dash when changing your alternator (they probably did not disconect the battery properly before accidentally grounding out the ossitive cable) if you have a fuse guide for your vehicle, often located on the inside of the fuse panel or in the manual, see if it says which fuse operates the dash lights. Or you can just pull out the fuses one by one and see f any look burnt in the middle. This is one of those issues where moraly, they should be responsible, but it would be less hassle to just replace the fuse yourself :-( . Hope this helps ~ Dave ( Oh.. before you go driving around might want to check all of your signals and lights inclusing reverse and brake lights to make sure that nothing else is wronge)
no the reinstalling of the alternator wont fix it. and its possible that if they crossed some wires or the battery posts that it may have shorted the processor for the dash. Not knowing what all they have tested I can only offer a few thoughts. I would replace the relays connected to the interior electrical components as maybe one fried, I'd also check the dash dimmer to see if its damaged. then have the parameters run on the ecm to see if there are any fault codes.

I have a honda accord 2008 2dr. I dont want to change my alternator. What should i had, a capactior or a batte?
you should first change your set up. 1200 watts for your mids and highs is too much and 1000 for bass its a bit much but really low compared to your highs. fix that first then come back
I have a honda accord 2008 2dr. I dont want to change my alternator. What should i had, a capactior or a batte?
What brand and model number amps? Your car 4 cylinder or V6?
You'll have to change the alternator to a high output one. You want to spend all this money on a capacitor or a battery? Why not on an alternator? And put the more powerful amp on the sub.
i would first upgrade the battery and upgrade your big 3 ground wires...look it up its different for every car. if your lights are going out when you hit bass then u need to get that alternator swapped out after the above. new car = expensive high output alternator. but if im correct, dont listen to the guy saying to switch out the stronger amp for the door speakers because thats obviously (9/10) the max wattage. all he knows you can be running that 1200 watt max amp but doenst know that would equal to about 100 - 200 wrms at 4 or 2 ohms which is a actually a decent setup am i correct??? that 1000 amp would match up ya sub perfectly hopefully its running at 400+ wrms to keep up with your door speakers. if you go it like that your good

How do you change an alternator on a 1993 honda accord at?

do you have to pop the axcel to remove the alternator and if so do the boots pop off when you pop the axcel or is there a way that they come of before that .if anyone knows the complete steps or even a diagram of replacing the alternator I would appreciate it
How do you change an alternator on a 1993 honda accord at?
You don't take off the boots. You remove the half axle with boots and CV joints attached. I replaced the axles on mine last year. It involves removing the wheel then the large nut that holds the hub on [sometimes difficult]. Detaching the lower ball joint [can also be difficult for the novice or beginner]. Taking out the lower bolt that attaches the fork. Pry the axle out at the transaxle with a pry bar and remove it. Then you should be able to get the alternator out.

You sure you want to do this?

that is the easiest way. but the boots dont just pop off.

I need to know how to change alternator on a 1994 ford probe?

    locate the alternator.

disconnect the battery - negative (ground) wire first - VERY important.

unplug the connector(s) at the alternator.

Remove the bolts (usually one above and one below) holding the alternator in place.

Un thread the alternator from the belt.

Remove, take to auto-parts store to trade for replacement.
I need to know how to change alternator on a 1994 ford probe?
Your best bet if you do not know how already is to buy a Chilton's manuel, they are sold at almost all auto parts stores and more than likey, you will use it more than you think. However, it should just be disconnect the battery, discount the wiring harness going to the alternator, unbolt the alternator and take off the belt off of it, then do the reverse to put it back on. But I would still get the Chilton's.
I need to know how to change alternator on a 1994 ford probe?
Alternators are pretty simple... I've done them on a Probe GT but you never said which probe, pretty much the same either way though...

    -Disconnect neg. battery cable

-Raise and support the passenger side of the car

    -Remove the passenger wheel

-Remove the plastic splash sheld on the passenger side, few screw fasteners and 10mm bolts

    -Remove the alternator belt

--Locate the idler pulley (the one that is JUST a pulley, nothing else)

    --Loosen the pulley bolt

--Turn the long bolt going through the pulley bracket to loosen the belt

    --Remove the belt

-Remove the wire harness from the front side of the alternator

-Remove the ground wire from the front side of the alternator (it's a nut that should be covered with a plastic shield)

-Remove the 2(maybe 3?) bolts holding the alternator

-Remove the alternator from underneath the car

Install is just reverse of that. Getting it out can be a pain, I think on my old GT I took the A/C compressor off of it's bracket and supported it to the side so that I had a little more room. Hope it helps

How to change an alternator belt on a 1990 Mazda Protege?

vI'm new at changing these things and I find tough to get in there and change the belt. too many bolts
How to change an alternator belt on a 1990 Mazda Protege?
you have to reselease the power steering pump first then at the alternator look for the tensioner there and probably you have to go under the car to release the alternator in order to release the alternator

thats a very simple thing to do but .....if was you ill pay for the job done
How to change an alternator belt on a 1990 Mazda Protege?
Never looked at one of these.. but there should be belt tensioner that you release with a breaker bar, slip the old belt off and new one on....

I would suggest the purchase of a Haynes repair manual for this car.. not too expensive.. at the auto parts store.. will show you how to do this kind of stuff.....

I have a mitsubishi eclipse 1999 and i change the alternator and the battery but i always have 2 jump it off?
u prolly have a short some where in ur wiring, u should go to a mechanic and get it checked out.dat would b da best thing to do. good luck
I have a mitsubishi eclipse 1999 and i change the alternator and the battery but i always have 2 jump it off?
Just because you change the alternator doesn't mean the one that you put on is working. It sounds like you either did not hook all of the wires back up. Or the alternator is not charging.
make sure something isnt left on!!!

Sometimes the armature for the starter gets stuck this will cause battery drain.

if the voltage regulator is external. it may be bad and this would keep it from charging the battery
Check the voltage regulator, either that or you have a really bad short somewhere. Check your wiring and make sure that you don't have any bare wires touching any metal.

  • How do you change a alternator on a 1983 Honda CVCC station wagon?

I use Mitchell's repair books at my local library's reference section. The Mitchell's are not the cheapo books sold in auto parts stores, but professional books. They may have more info than you need, but it sure beats paying $18 for a Haynes book that may not give all the info needed.

Bring some change with you and use the copy machine to copy the pages needed.

How do i change the alternator on a 2005 Suzuki XL-7?

I am having trouble getting into where the bolts are just wondering if i need to take anything off or just try it like it is?
How do i change the alternator on a 2005 Suzuki XL-7?
Good luck! I recently changed the alternator belt on my XL-7 and it ain't easy. mine is an 02 and unless they have changed it - the pivot bolt at the bottom of the alternator is a Torx 50 female head. So you need a Torx 50 male (it looks kinda like a hex key with pointed corners) 3/8 drive and the right extensions to get to it. Make sure the torx bolt orifice is clean of debris and get the socket key fully seated - or you run the risk of stripping the bolt head out. if this happens you are pretty screwed and will probably have to pull the radiator to get access to the bolt so you can drill off the head. Or chisel it off or torch it to anneal it. you might want to consider actually taking it to a Suzuki dealer - and hopefully they wont screw it up.

92 Camry, how hard it is to change the alternator on my own?

92 Camry, how hard it is to change the alternator on my own? and what tools do I need?

    Thanks a lot.
92 Camry, how hard it is to change the alternator on my own?
wow, about the easiest alt in the world. you need a 14mm, a 12mm and a 10mm and a mechanical mind. thats bout it. Just remember to disconnect your battery before you decided to jump into this..... somehow Im worried about this situation. (IM NOT RESPONSIBLE WHEN YOU SHORT OUT YOUR CAR ;) )
92 Camry, how hard it is to change the alternator on my own?
You'll need a set of metric sockets and/or combination wrenches. It's not all that terribly difficult. The hard part will be getting the belt reinstalled; that may take some extra work. When you get the new alternator, check to see that it is the same as the one you're replacing, then make note of where it is located on the engine. Loosen the bolts, (disconnect the wires first), then slide the old alternator toward the engine. Remove the bolts and remove the alternator from the bracket. To install the new one, simply reverse the process. It's not rocket science, but it does take some work and thought before attempting the job. Good luck!
it shouldn't be too hard. i suggest taking some digital pictures before you take it apart. if you can't do that make notes of where wires and bolts are connected. i like to make a list of everything i do and every part i take off. when i put it back together i start at the bottom of the list and work back to the top checking things off.

I've just changed the alternator on my car and the volts light goes on when i accelerate, why?

when i accelerate my volts light starts to flicker, and when i go above 25mph it stays on. ot times when i stop for a light the volts light will go out, then back on when i accelerate.
I've just changed the alternator on my car and the volts light goes on when i accelerate, why?
Could be numerous things, bad battery, bad cables, loose connections, defective alternator, your best bet is to take it to a reputable repair facility for a proper diagnosis rather than throwing parts at it hoping for a cheap fix.
I've just changed the alternator on my car and the volts light goes on when i accelerate, why?
    your belt isnt tight.

Tighten it up, should stop doing that.

When you accelerate, the belt slips more.
probably a faulty alternator, could also be a faulty voltage regulator (depending on the year/make/model of your vehicle)

Even new in box parts can be junk. Always have the parts store test the new items before you leave.
Sounds like a defective part. If you replaced the alternator with one that puts out more amps than the original, your cars electrical system is trying to prevent an overload into the car. A safety device you could say to protect it from being fried.
Your serpentine belt is loose. Get a new one.
I agree with Dave on this one but here is a hint advance auto parts has nothing but rebuilt alts. and starters I would in the future have it tested before leaving the store plus if your belt was loose it would squeal loudly when lights and accessories were on but it's always good to put a new belt on when changing the alt that way you could keep an emergency spare belt in the trunk in case of need I do and i have not regretted it.. ps im not knocking advance auto they really do have great parts but some not tested..
It sounds like your charging system is operating wide open all of the time. Use a voltmeter to check the voltage at the battery while the car is running. The voltage should be between 12.5V-14.5V. Then, see what it is when the engine RPMs are around 2500. If it goes above 14.5V, your voltage regulator or related circuit wiring is to blame.
It's sounds like you belt is slipping or glazed. Or maybe you just didn;t tighten it enough.

My BMW X5 starts up, revs to about 1200, then slowly dies down. Changed alternator, battery, and fuel pump...?

I changed the alternator battery and fuel pump but the car still wont run smooth. My diagnostic check says that I have an idle control valve malfunction and a crankshaft position sensor thing. Would any of this be the reason for the car starting, then slowly dying? The mechanic I took it to said it was the fuel pump then the alternator then the battery so I have wasted a lot of money so far.

How do i change an Alternator on a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero (3400)?
Handy tip: shut the car off first before working on it
first i would take it to automotive store like advance or autozone and have them check the alt to m,ake sure that is what it is. Then on that car if that is what it is you have got alot of work ahead of you, i believe that the alt is all the way on lthe bottom next to the fire wall and if so then you have to jack the car up and put it on jack stands and then take the floor jack and put it under the sub frame and put some tension on the sub frame and then lo sen the front sub frame bolts and then take out the back sub frame bolts and then take the floor jack and let it down real slowly until you have enough room to take the alt out from underneath putting the new one in is just reversed

if the vehicle is a no crank situation, it may have disturbed the passlock module of the system, this can cause that exact sitation. or your starter is dead.
I have a 1998 pontiac sunfire %26amp; changed the alternator. Now it does;nt start radio %26amp; ligths work not starter?
You might want to start with the battery on the alternator. Recheck all the wire that you might have disconnected and the other wire around the alternator. You might have pinched a wire.
remove starter, bench test it,and take from there.

Pontiac Sunfire Doesn't Start After Battery & Alternator Change?

My husband and bother in law changed both the battery and alternator on a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire. It won't turn on. Is there something that has to be reset? Is this some sort of safety feature?

    Thanks
Pontiac Sunfire Doesn't Start After Battery %26amp; Alternator Change?
There is no mechanical locking system to prevent you from turning the key to the on/start postion

*if the key drum will not rotate after entry into the ignition it could be that the wheel lock pin is mechanically pressed hard against the locking sprocket. This is a rare condition to come across but it does happen. Try applying turning pressure one way on the wheel and attempt to turn the key. If that fails try the other way. Still not luck? Try varying the key depth in the ignition. Will the key turn back for the accessory power on mode?

*if the key drum will not turn at all and is in the on/start position and you cannot remove the key, try varying the key depth in ignition. A failing keydrum will not always hold the key at the depth required to allow movement. Kind of a partial lock position. IF this is interpreting our latest note correctly and pushing the key in more and backing the key out fails to work try some wd-40.

I had a 1996 pontiac sunfire %26quot;burn out%26quot; its ignition switch due to a design defect. I don't know if your year was affected by this.

Some things to check out assuming the car engine turns over but does not start.

*Do you hear the fuel pump run when the ignition is first turned on? Should be anywhere from a a half of a second to two typically. Lower the seat back on the rear seats and see if you can hear a mid frequency hum. If no, repeat with someone else turning the car on while you stand in back passenger side, fuel fill area.

*Someone hear mentioned the ignition coil pack. You can disconnect the plug wires from each plug and test with an old spark plug. One at a time with someone else %26quot;starting%26quot; the engine hold the wire from the thick rubber boot with a spare spark plug in it, connected. Touch the screw thread portion to a ground (metal) strap or bare metal under the hood. If you see a spark between the center of the plug and the metal strip connected below the screw threads then you can be reasonably assured there is spark. This is a good time to make sure the spark plug wire connections are clean from the coil packs to the spark plugs individually.

*There can be several faults with electrical wiring alone that can cause the TheftLock light to pop on and prevent the engine from starting.

Now with the following suggestions are hard to diagnose because the car was electrically dead for a long enough time to clear out any service codes that may have been stored. before the battery was swapped out. A good mechanic, who is hard to find would scan the computer for stored codes. The Sunfire computer systems will turn the service light off after a period of time but still retain the code. Anything along these lines from here on out is less likely but difficulty to diagnose properly without the engine running on its own power. Sensors are non-returnable items.

*If the engine was running particularly rough and sluggish before it stopped there may be a problem with your air intake manifold gasket. Typically problems here are noticeable enough when one cylinder's seal is lost you seek service. If the symptom described here is reminiscent of your issue, you can try holding an unlit blow torch near the intake manifold off of each cylinder where the intake meets the head. If the engine behavior changes and it sounds like it is stumbling, trying but failing to start you have found your problem. Do this test outdoors and a max 15 seconds per spot, 1 minute between each time.

*The Mass Airflow Sensor (typically called MAF sensor) could have an electrical fault internally or along its wiring. The car may have been hard starting.
Pontiac Sunfire Doesn't Start After Battery %26amp; Alternator Change?
is the theft light flashing on the instrument panel cluster after you try to start it? that would indicate a theft deterrent problem. don't panic, leave the key on for 10 minutes after attempting to star it. that flashing theft light will turn off after 10 minutes, then turn the key off, for 5 seconds, and start it. if it is a theft deterrent concern, it will start. if it's something else, well, back to the drawing board.
If you have some mechanical knowledge follow this: see if you have battery voltage at the big wire on the starter. NO- possible fuseable link at the starter. YES- check voltage on small wire with ignition in the CRANK/START position. Now to cont. with the %26quot;NO%26quot; and yes to good fuseable links. Check your battery wires. Both pos and neg. Check the ground wire and make sure it has a good connection. Make sure you have voltage at the battery wire (big one). If yes to those then on to the small wire... If no on the voltage with in crank position the most likely it is the starter switch. Go to the parts store and buy one to see what you have to replace. Most likely it won't be the key switch. Any other questions or help contact me and I will try some more advice. Good Luck..and have fun

Do i need to change the alternator? in order to get it to work.?

i have a 2001 pontiac sunfire gt and it has its stock alternator. it came with a system %26quot;Monsoon%26quot; but it doesnt have subs. so im thinking of putting an extra amplifiers 1000W and 2 12%26quot; subs. will i need to make other mods like changing the alternator or getting a capacitor?
Do i need to change the alternator? in order to get it to work.?
no new alternator but a capacitor for a little car like that would help out alot. for 1000 watts get a 1 farad cap.
Do i need to change the alternator? in order to get it to work.?
U shouldnt have to change it,,,check the rms level of what UR using and that'll show u whats WHAT ,,,only use a cap if the RMS on the speakers and amp is over1000 watts RMS....
A power capacitor is the way to go.
u don't have to change it to work because i have a 1500 watt hi phonics crunch amp with 2 12'' kicker compvt's and it hits extremly hard and the only thing i had to do was add a capacitor because it made all my dash lights blink with the bass and ever since i did that it does not hit with the bass and not to mention that i never had any problems out of my car before or after the capacitor besides the lights.
    Whats the TOTAL RMS?

Probably needs to be upgraded if your total RMS is up there close to 1,000RMS.

I have a 65A alternator and it handles 500RMS and no more.

Oh and just to let you know, all the other guys have NO idea what they are talking about. A capacitor just makes things worse by putting MORE stress on the alternator.

I just did a 1999 intrepid with the 2.7 yesterday. From the top of the engine compartment there is a cross member right over top of the radiator and fan. I did it from the bottom took me bout 4-5 hours to take it out and reinstall. Have a helper so you can take the top bolt out. Loosen the idler too

Do I really need to upgrade my alternator before I add my car system ?

I have a 2007 Impala LS and I was told that I need to change my alternator first..Another person told me I could just use a second battery such as optima so my battery won't die..My entire car stereo system is 1200 watts and I don't want to mess up anything..
Do I really need to upgrade my alternator before I add my car system ?
look at you amplifier/s and note the fuses installed. check the radio fuse . Now add up the value of the fuses. then check the current rating of the alternator. you've said the system rating was 1200w then at 12 you will require 100amps max to run the audio system. assuming these figures are accurate then your current alternator [ probably 60 to 80 amp] will not suffice. I asked you to add up the vale of the fuses because this gives a more realistic view of the current required. If the 100amps is correct then you have no reserve current available to run the car or charge the battery;therefore you will be required to upgrade your alternator. ps if you never run your system to near its capacity then you may just get away with not upgrading the alternator. But if you intend to drive it hard then you will need to upgrade or you will suffer endless flat batteries and reduced performance from your motor vehicle. good luck.
Do I really need to upgrade my alternator before I add my car system ?
It would be advisable, however not absolutely necessary. You definitely should get a second battery, and have an Optima or something other than stock under the hood as well. Kinetic or XS Power are the two more known brands for Car Audio batteries. You can put one in the trunk, but BE SURE TO SECURE IT!

Can't afford to take it in to a shop.. Thanks.
How do i change the alternator on a 1995 grand am gt?
Take the old one off...bolt on the new one, reattach the belt...

It's on of the easiest parts to change.

The guy below is right about the belt tensioner. It's a bolt your turn that moves and loosens it. Do this with a friend, it takes some muscle.

I say this because if you do it with one hand on the wrench and one to grab the belt, it can slip and you can smash yourself in the face with the wrench. There's tension from a spring to keep the belt tight, and that same spring is what you need to compress to loosen the belt.

There's usually a little picture of belt inside your hood. PAY ATTENTION to how it goes on though, it has to be weaved through the right way or your car won't work.
How do i change the alternator on a 1995 grand am gt?
Go to parts store and buy a Haynes manual for your vehicle ($20) It will give you step by step description on haw to replace alternator and also on how to remove belt.
theres a belt tensioner. You have to loosen it and just pull the belt off. really simple.

How do i change my alternator?

i have a 99 chevy silverado and i can't take the thing off? i undid the two screws in the front but it still won't budge is there another screw somewhere i don't know about? also any tips when installing my new one? what should i watch out for? thanks for all your guys help.
How do i change my alternator?
I am doing this very same thing on the very same truck..lol

I have a '99 silverado 5.3 extended cab. first you need to remove the hot cable from the battery. Next remove the 2 bolts from the bottom of the alternator. Next unbolt the battery and power wire cables from the back, making sure to put the bolts back so you don't loose them after you take the wires off. Next take a 1/2 rachet and socket to the belt tensioner nut on the pulley and turn it counterclockwise...this will loosen the belt and allow you to take the belt off and remove the alternator. Once removed...reverse the process looking at the belt diagram on the fan shroud to get it back right. You may have to take a flat blade screwdriver and remove part of the air intake to get to the tensioner, which is on the left side of the engine while facing the truck...

    Good luck....it's easy.
How do i change my alternator?
first remove the battery connection..maybe the positive cable..then there is still a set of bolt and nuts at the bottom.

I think the screws that you are referring to are the alternator case screws. You are looking for two or three large hex bolts that are mounted on the rear of the alternator and attached to the mounting brackets of the front of the engine. These bolts are going to require a ratchet and socket to remove from the bracket. More than likely they are 15mm hex bolts and they do face forward in most cases.

Depending on the engine type there will be either two or three of these bolts. Sometimes the alternator case has what is called a dog ear that sticks out from the rear of the alternator case. These are the bolts you need to remove in order to pull the alternator from your vehicle.

The screws that I think you are referring to actually hold the alternator together. These were probably about 4 inches long and went completely through the alternator. Right? You need to replace these before you remove the alternator. You might have a little excitement on your hands if you don't.

Here is some advice about obtaining a new alternator. Get one from the Parts Department at Chevrolet. I have been working for GM for a few years in their parts house, (currently) and as a Mechanic.

The alternators you get from your aftermarket stores are not very good quality. These items are normally pulled from wrecking yards and wholesaled out to a rebuilder which tests them, cleans them, and only repairs what is wrong with them. Then these are sent out to the parts stores and sold as a rebuilt unit with a lifetime warranty. After you have installed 3 or 4 of them you might get a good one.

GM, Ford, Chrysler, and most other Dealership Parts Houses, send the units out to Factory Authorized Service Centers for a complete remanufacturing process. At GM the alternators and starters are completely dis-assembled and all of the internal parts discarded. The only parts that are used again, (provided they meet specifications), are the outer cases.

All of the bearings, wiring, circuits, and internal parts are completely new. But because the outer case was recycled, we are required to call them remanufactured products. Also GM parts all carry a 12 month or 12,000 Mile Warranty from GM. So if the part fails in that period of time, just bring it back with your receipt, and you will get handed a new part.

Just be sure that you show up at the parts department with your VIN so we can get you the correct alternator the first time through.

While you are in there, I would also suggest that you get a new serpentine belt and replace it along with your alternator. Don't forget to check you battery, and clean the terminals and any other connections.

Good Luck, and I hope I helped you out.

How long and difficult would it be to change the alternator on a 95 mercury mystique?

    Two hours total.
How long and difficult would it be to change the alternator on a 95 mercury mystique?
It's really a matter of how well you work around cars. It isn't the worst job in the world. Probably take an expert mechanic 40 minutes. The back yard guy can figure an hour and a half. Be real careful and pay attention to where things were before you remove them. Digital photos will help if you got the tech.
How long and difficult would it be to change the alternator on a 95 mercury mystique?
On a 1984 buick skyhawk, about one hour or less. Most alternators mount the same way in different orders from top to bottom, the skyhawks was on top to keep it dry.Usually, you simply loosen the mounting bolts (one pivots, one or two others keep the tension on the belt). Then undo the electrical connections(Do not let them touch and label them to make sure you don't blow the electrical system).Work carefully and thouroly as it is difficult to undo things in tight quarters.Make sure to use jack stands if working underneath, dropping a car on your head will kill you.A rebuilt alternator will cost $50-150 depending on complexity.Make sure it goes back together as it was before, any exposed electrical can start fires.

  • How do you change the alternator in an 01 Volvo V70?

My boyfriend is trying to change the alternator and it is like nothing he has seen before. He thought he had to jack the engine, but that didn't work. He is stuck and does not know what to do.
How do you change the alternator in an 01 Volvo V70?
    1. disconnect the negative battery cable [lay a rag over the battery post to prevent accidental arcing.

2 remove serpentine drive belt [make a drawing of belt routing before removal] now remove belt tensioner.

3 remove power steering fluid supply hose from pump [catch fluid from resivour in a pan and dispose of properly][you will need approx a bottel and a half of NEW fluid upon reassembely]

3-a at this point disconnect the top radiator hose from engine and lay aside [about 2 quarts of coolant will be lost]

4 remove the pressure line from the pump and lay aside [cover open end with another rag to prevent dirt entry] now unbolt and remove the pump.

5 note the position of wires on back of alternator [don't remove just yet]

6 the alternator %26quot;nests%26quot; between the a/c compressor and the engine block. so remove the top 2 compressor bolts, then loosen but DO NOT

remove the bottom 2 compressor bolts.

7 now remove the one bolt at the top of the alternator, [this is a little tight to fit hand there]

8 pull alternator towred the fnt. of car and upwards at the same time, all while twisting enough to expose wiring, whitch can now be disconnected.

9 now pull alternator out from the top.

10 while installation is the reverse of above leave the battery feed wire a little loose [the big red wire] until new alternator is securely mounted

then this can be tightened after wire is back in guide groove [don't forget to reinstall the wire cover, it just snaps in place]

11 fill p/s resivour and coolant resivourto mark [leave coolant cap off so pressure wont build up and scald you]. before starting.

let warm at idle until cooling fans come on and recheck the coolant level, adding as necessary then replacing the cap
How do you change the alternator in an 01 Volvo V70?
I don't think you can do this yourself.

You are able to take it out, but if you change it, you need software for the new alternator. So the new alternator wouldn't work properly.

How do you pick out an alternator ?

I have a Honda Accord 96. My electrician says the alternator has gone bad. Of course I don't wholly agree. How do you really know that the alternator needs changing? Is it ideal to get an alternator that closely matches the amperage of the battery? I've heard of %26quot;power%26quot; alternators that do 150 amps to 170 amps, are they really better? My lights are HID, I also have a sound system with an amplifier but without a subwoofer. Thanks !
How do you pick out an alternator ?
The ONLY way to test an alternator is to have a charging system test performed where a controlled load is applied to the electrical system and the alternator output amperage and voltage is measured. Also have the battery load tested to check it's condition, but the one thing that must be know about a battery test is that the battery must be fully charged or it will fail the test. Get a replacment alternator that is the same as the one that came off of the car.
How do you pick out an alternator ?
have your car running...remove the ( - ) negative cable that is connected to the battery while leaving the positive + plugged in to the battery. If the car stalls then the alternator has gone bad.If it continues to run then it is fine.If you need one then simply know your cars motor information, make, model and year when picking one up.

Do not take car advice from an electrician when it comes to your car! What does his career have to do with cars????

Call a mechanic and ask if maybe you need to replace your battery with one that puts out more cranking amps.
your sound system probably burnt out you alt.,you need to upgrade to higher amp's output alt.some auto parts stores will check your alt. for free
never disconnect the battery cable on a car with electronics when the engine is running. it can cause a power surge when you plug it back up and burn a sensor or computer.
The ONLY way is to get it tested. A cheap test is to get a volt meter and see what the voltage is when running. First, get the voltage of the batter before running. It might be 12-12.5V. With the engine running, it should be between 13.5-14.5V. Most alternators should be at that area when running..... any lower, it might show a problem.

If you don't have an volt meter, go to your local auto parts store. I know that Autozone can test them in the car while Schucks, you have to remove it. Testing is the only way to know.

Alright, I don't know how many amps your current one is. But I do know, the battery plays a big role in electrical accessories. Buy yourself a good HD batter. My suggestion is an Optima battery...a Yellow top. They can take the 'abuse' of a sound system (depending on how BIG it is).

Upgrade alternators are available for just about anything. Usually a good parts place will list higher amp ones in the catalog or comptuer. If not, fine a local shop (small one) that deals with starters and alternators. They'll able to hook you up with what you need.

    How to change alternator?

my mate's car wont start she had to call out recovery because i was unavailable to go jump her, she did unfortunately get another friend to do it but they managed to melt the leads whoops defo went wrong connecting the leads well cut a story short recovery bloke said she will need a new alternator, what would be the costs of having this repair done at a garage, or how would i go about changing it myself if i were to get the part im pretty niffy with my hands and do quite a lot of work on me own car
    How to change alternator?
Garages can have a right old field day with alternators and regularly do! Charging literally anything up to 拢300!

I wouldn't even get a new unit - get the blown one fixed. They are pretty much infinitely repairable. Check out the yellow pages under auto-electrics etc. There are people in most areas who specialise in just alternators, dynamos and magnetos etc.

They are only a real pain to change on some modern cars where they are buried under other components.

    How to change alternator?
It's fairly simple to change out an alternator. There are typically 1-2 bolts, and 1-2 wire connections (usually a cable held on with a nut on a stud, and an electrical connector). The alternator is usually toward the top of the engine, making it pretty easy to get to.
yes you can do it, but i recommend buying a cheap set of sockets and end wrenches, and from the sounds of your typoaccent, metric.read any instructions in the box.sometimes there are special replacement parts or special instructions.

How to change a alternator belt plus a power steering and air conditioner belt?

i have a 1994 kh ford laser and 1.6 carb and need to change the belts and i do not know how to take the tension off the power steering/ air conditioner belt
How to change a alternator belt plus a power steering and air conditioner belt?
On the power steering directly below the pulley and to the front of the car is the tension screw for the air conditioning and power steering belt. Approximately 2 inches back from that screw is the locking nut for the tension screw, this one is tricky to get to as the pulley may be in the road. Loosen this nut and that will allow you to loosen the tension on the belt.
How to change a alternator belt plus a power steering and air conditioner belt?
On one of the pulleys you put a 18m socket (long socket) and there's a Bolt on the pulley just turn it one way or another and that will relieve the tension,

Now the 18m was for a ford Taurus

  • Car Keeps Dying Even After I Changed Alternator/Battery?

I need some serious help so i will explain. my car started dying on me when i put on my blinker, headlights a/c, heater, step on the brakes.Anything i do the gauges all drop and the car starts to die. I changed the battery and put in an alternator. the car ran 3 days and same thing started to happen the 4th day.my mechanic friend put in another alternator and it drove for a week and 3 days then the same problem again. WHY?!!? i did my car up so nice for summer and i cant do **** with it now. Please help me?!!??!
Car Keeps Dying Even After I Changed Alternator/Battery?
Have you had your voltage regulator checked? It is usually better to have it checked when the car is having problems as the voltage regulator can be tricky and work intermittently.
Car Keeps Dying Even After I Changed Alternator/Battery?
take it to dealer...you have an electrical short.....no amount of parts replacing will make short go away.
could be corroded power cables going to the battery
i agree with the first answer. you have a short. the electrical system can be a tricky monster. unless you consider yourself an expert, take it to a dealer or a shop that will do electrical work.
if its an older car it could have an external voltage regulator which would need replacing... in newer vehicles theyre part of the alternator... or you could have an electrical short. have you recently had a stereo installed? shoddy car stereo installs are notorious for weird electrical problems.
with the car off....have the tech check the battery load with an amp meter... this will tell you if your using current while its not running, meaning possibly somethings on or a short...
Trace the wire between the alternator and the starter. I don't know if your car has one but there might be a small plastic box (or anything that the cable goes into and comes out the other side) with a fuse inside of it. If you find it you can go to NAPA and show them what you have and they can get you one for about 10 bucks. It's a pretty simple fix if that's the problem. If not then I'm sorry. I couldn't tell you.

    good luck.

How do I change the alternator in an 1997 Chevry Lumina?

I need to put in an alternator in my car and I would rather do it myself if it's fairly simple. It's so expensive to take it somewhere.

First go get a manual from AutoZone. It cost $13 and it will tell you exactly what to take off to get to it. It is a great investment because sooner or later something else needs to be fix or replaced. so you can go back for reference. good luck
How do I change the alternator in an 1997 Chevry Lumina?
Hey Man it is really easy just follow these 3 simple stips.

1: take up the car's hood and try to locate exact place I mean the alternator ,

2:watch it carefully and get some wrenches like 14/6mm,18/7mm,an adjustable wrenchs, try to unscrew the bolts, and at the same time place every bolt is you take it out in order so next time you can use it well.

3:finally you have finneshed taking the alternator out and install the new one at the same order !

    yes i learned it while a mechanic was repairing my car in a highway to home ....This INFO was all that I remember may be You can just call a mechanic and let him tell you on the phone %26gt;%26gt;%26gt;
that belt is under alot of tension dont just unbolt it. ive never worked on a lumina, so i cant walk you through it, but you will probably see a bracket with an adjustment of somekind, like a half-moon rather than just a hole, and when you loosen that youll have to find the bolt the alternator pivots on and just loosen that one too dont remove them yet and try to take tension off the belt by pivoting the alternator.i dont know how many bolts are in this application because iv never worked on this car. but just remember that you must get the tension off the belt before removing it.and a haynes repair manual is a good thing to have.

How do i change the alternator on a fiat punto 1.2?

My Fiat Punto 1.2 didn't start one morning, someone looked at it and said its the battery.I changed it and it worked for few days and then it died again. The only logical solution is to change the alternator but i don't want to go to a mechanic because i'm already short on cash. Can someone please explain how i can change it myself?
How do i change the alternator on a fiat punto 1.2?
On the 1.2 Punto engine, the alternator is located at the rear of the engine, furthest from the gearbox. The alternator pivots on one mounting and has a second mounting which tightens to tension the belt. Access is easier with the roadwheel and wheelarch liner removed (simply screwed in.) Disconnect the battery and slacken all the mounting bolts for the alternator. This will loosen the belt so it can be removed. Disconnect the wiring connectors from the rear of the alternator and then remove the alternator all together. Replacement is the reverse of fitting, but i would recommend a new belt at the same time - if the old belt snaps, it can rip off the cambelt aswell which is not good news! To tension the belt, use a pry bar to push the alternator away from the engine and tighten the belt. Hold this tension as you tighten up the top mounting nut which will then keep the tension.
How do i change the alternator on a fiat punto 1.2?
disconect the battery but before you do make sure you have the radio code, remove the wire`s attatched to the alt/unit take the bolts off that secure the altinator, refit in reverse order.

How do I change the alternator of a 95 pontiac gand am?

the engine is a V6, i just need to know how to change it without takeing the whole engine apart.
How do I change the alternator of a 95 pontiac gand am?
it should be pretty easy on the car, the motor is either a 3.1ltr or the 3800 and the alt should be on top and in the middle. Take the neg bat cable off and then take a three eights drive ratchet and turn back the belt tension er and undo the belt and then undo the plug to the alt and then take out the two bolts and presto new back in same order but reversed.
How do I change the alternator of a 95 pontiac gand am?
your engine will be a 3100, changing the alternator is a little hard

to do the first time but here goes. most belt tensioners take a 15mm wrench to take the tension off the belt. it will be hard to remove the tension without a special or long end wrench but it can be done. then remove the belt from the alternator, there is a large red wire attached to the alternator and 2 or 3 smaller wires the plug into it. you might have to have a %26quot;back up%26quot; wrench to remove the nut on the red wire, they often turn inside and ruin the alternator. there are 2 bolts that hold the alternator in its brackets

and a smaller bracket on the back side with a bolt in the alternator and a nut onto the top of the motor. it is a 15 minute job if you have the tools and have done it before.
disconnect the shiz and connect the shiz man.
You may need a special wrench designed for releasing the tensioner assembly so you can remove the belt. Once you accomplish this, it's pretty straight forward. First, disconnect the battery! Proceed with the belt, and move on. Two or three bolts, depending upon the design of the bracket, and the whole thing will lift right out. Take it with you when you purchase the new one. There are 4, yes 4 different locations for the wiring connections. This is known as %26quot;clocking%26quot;. It is much easier to get the correct one the first time, but, if you need your ride right away, and your local auto parts store doesn't have the proper one, you can do this yourself. If you have an impast wrench, spin the pulley loose. Don't remove it yet! Turn it up, nose down, on a table or workbench. You need to take the three bolts loose that keep the housing together. Do NOT, under ANY circumstances lift the alternator up from now on. If you do, no sweat, but this isn't alternator rebuild 101. With the nose of the alternator on the table, take the three bolts out. Tap on the front portion of the housing and it will drop down. Spin it so that the mounting holes and the harness connections are in the correct location and re-install the three bolts. You will have to tighten them in sequence otherwise it may cause the armature to bind. I've done thousands of them. It will take you about 15 minutes to clock it if you have to.

    if it's anything like a late 80s / early 90s VW...

slacken off the alternator adjusting bolts, rotate the alt towards the engine, remove old belt, fit new belt, rotate alt away from engine until belt is just tense enough to be twistable thru no more than 90 degrees, and retighten. easy.

have a certified auto mechanic do it for you...that's the easiest way.
there actually is no easy way..sorry...
take it to a mechanic and have him change it.
you can probobly replace it yourself, but your timing belt has to be adjusted too , by a professional
cut open the old one %26amp; adjust the distance between the ends. %26amp; then fit it.then readjust the distance
The easiest way is to let someone else do it! Seriously, it would be best to let a repair shop do it - it may cost a little more, but they have the proper tools needed (you would have to rent them) and it is warrantied by them. Find a local independent repairman to do the job.....they are less expensive than dealerships and large repair chains.
go buy the belt your self, then have a shop do it. it will be cheaper and less work for you and youll get some type of warrenty on the labor. hey roxy
Easiest way is to find someone else to do it. If you cannot see how to do it, you have no business doing it.
The easiest way is to take it to a shop.
Buy the Chilton's or Haynes repair manual pick up the belt while your their and be done .... It's cake to replace!
