How can I maintain my alternator?

I am having to have my alternator changed for the second time in a year. It%26#039;s a Saturn 2001 SL1 sedan. The first time it died while I was on the road. At least this time I caught it going out before my car stopped in the road. Could it be something I%26#039;m doing, though? I know almost nothing about cars and the shops don%26#039;t explain things well. I thought maybe I%26#039;m not maintaining something correctly or mis-using something and that is why this has happened.|||There really isn%26#039;t any maintenance that is done on an alternator. They do eventually wear out.

However, the majority of alternators usually come with a minimum of a 1 year warranty. (Check the warranty that the mechanic should have given you when you first had it replaced) If it has been under a year, your mechanic should replace the alternator at the cost of his labor.

I recommend purchasing an alternator from a parts store like Autozone, they typically have many levels of warranties they sell with an alternator. I recommend getting the life time warranty alternator. If the alternator ever breaks down again, all you have to do is take in the old alternator and they will give you a new one at no additional cost. (You%26#039;ll just pay for installation if you don%26#039;t do it yourself) The lifetime warrantied alternators also seem to be better built/reconditioned than those with only a 1 year warranty.|||There really isnt any maintence to do for an alternator. Just sounds like some bad luck. I just changed one in my mothers car, the new one lasted about 2 weeks then went again, just bad luck.|||It was probably made in China.

Other than adjusting belt tension there isn%26#039;t much you can do. You can find shops that will rebuild them, and if you do have proper tools you can buy kits to rebuild them yourself.|||alternators do not require any %26quot;maintenance.%26quot; but most of them do come with warranties so since yours failed within a year i would say that it should be replaced under some kinda warranty.

just make sure to buy a quality replacement, and get your warranty in writing.|||Other than making sure all plugs are plugged in, and all wires are tight, there is no maintenance that gets done to an alternator, it either works or it doesn%26#039;t. Do check to see if there was a warranty on the first one though, it may save you a little money. Yes, I%26#039;ve installed brand new ones and had them fail. It happens.|||could be another underlying problem there are relay switches that should shut the power off to you alternator when you fully charged.Your alternator probably isnt sutting down like it should causing it to burn out have a diagnostic test done this will tell you the exact problem|||There is really no one way to maintain an alternator.

What you should do though, is test the alternator that is supposedly bad to make sure that it really is a bad alternator and not some other problem, such as a bad connection. Also get an original equipment alternator and have it put on by a good technician.|||i shall impart my wisdom to you...rebuilt starters and alternators are CRAP.... the price is 1/3 to 1/2 off for a reason.....and rebuilt is different from remanufactured...rebuilt replaces worn out pts where as remanufactured does most parts....most use foreign [china] parts even if they are rebuilt here in the USA.. when installing Dont over tighten the belt...it can wear the bearings in the alt...make sure battery ahd wires are tight and clean..|||Alternators do not require maintenance. Try this next time you are in your car when it is dark outside. Start you car and see if your lights in and outside dim. Also if your radio is not that loud. Your battery might be your problem. Are there corrosion on the post, are your cables lose. Also your belt could be lose.

This has happened to me before and friends. I we have bought parts before and put them on and they were bad.

I have a 99 jeep cherokee and my alternator harness is draining my battery do i need a whole new wire harness?

I am trying to go the cheapest route is there any way to just change the alternator harness vs.changing the whole wire harness?|||Why do you need the jeep if you are just trying to get it the cheapest way?? Sell it and buy Daihatsu Core, your gategory.|||i would change the entire wiring harness. but that%26#039;s just because i prefer to be safe and not have o go back and do it later.|||Changing the alternator harness is the best way to go and it is in most cases the cheaper way to do things. This may not last you as long as changing the whole wire harness.|||Yeah if it keeps being like that then you have to do it|||Are you sure it%26#039;s the harness? Usually it%26#039;s a component that causes parasitic drain on a battery. If you have to fix the harness, I%26#039;d suggest just fixing the broken wires rather than changing out the harness. It%26#039;s a bit more labor intensive, but a lot cheaper.|||did u try a new battery.if u did and it didn%26#039;t work take it in for repairs...im not rlly a car person|||You should be able to buy only the connector. Check with your local dealer. I would not suggest the junk yard. One from there would be worn out too. If you have buy the whole harness, you can splice the connector in, but you will have solder the connections to do it right. Good luck.

I need help changing an alternator in a 97 Ford F150. HELP!!?

I dont have the Haynes manual and cant really afford 1. What kind of tools do I need and how difficult is it? Anyone know a good website that gives instructions?|||Can you afford another alternator and a new battery and a new computer and a new wiring harness and towing? Get the Haynes.|||I dont%26#039; know if there is a website for it but it%26#039;s not that difficult. You%26#039;ll need to disconnect your battery and remove a couple of bolts that the alternator is connected to the engine with. There will be 2 wires on the back of the alternator that you%26#039;ll have to disconnect (remember where they went for the new alternator). And you%26#039;ll have to take off your serpentine belt.

Just replace the new one in reverse order of the old one. The one thing to note is the tension of your serpentine belt. I know some of the newer F150s have an automatic sensor so you dont%26#039; have to worry about how tight it is but I%26#039;m not sure about the %26#039;97.

Best of luck.|||you can go to auto zones, help site they might have a part there for this, the addy is,,www autozone.com/help,,,good luck with it,have a good x-mas.|||all you need is a set of metric wrenches just make sure you disconnect the battery first to avoid injury and damage to your electrical system. then it%26#039;s just a matter of removing the belt and the bolts holding the alternator in|||Get one of the local gearheads to do it for you. They aren%26#039;t that hard to do, BUT you have no tools then you%26#039;re in trouble to start. Purchasing the tools need would probably cost you more then having it done.

Disconnect the positive(+) cable from the battery. Using a Breaker Bar with correct socket size, release the tensioner (idler pully) and remove serpentine belt. Disconnect wiring harness at rear of alternator. Using a 3/8 rachet, or open/close wrench, loosen upper mounting bolt. DO NOT completely remove at this point. Find where the alternator is mounted to the engine block and totally remove that bolt. Placing a hand under the unit for support, finish removing the upper bolt.

Reverse this procedure to reinstall new, rebuilt, alternator.

After you have completed the installation, start vehicle and allow it to run for 5-10 minutes. Check the gauge on dash cluster, if so equipped, to insure unit is funcational. This allow resets computer memories.|||Unplug the battery, unplug the alternator, put a break over bar or long handled socket wrench on the belt tensioner and remove the belt. Then Remove the bolts that mount it on, put the new one on, bolt it up, put the belt back on, plug in the altanator and reconnect the battery! Its simple!!!

How do I change the alternator on my 98' mustang?

I have a 3.8L v6 Mustang and I was hoping someone could post a %26quot;how to%26quot; or a %26quot;step by step%26quot; to help me out with changing my alternater! It shouldn%26#039;t be to difficult, I would just feel better havign something to guide me along the way!

Thanks alot!|||step 1 purchase alternator stepunhook battery from cable 2 remove alternator belt by pulling on the tenioner step 3 remove 2bolts from altinator step 4 remove wiring clips that go on step 5 theres usually will come with connections which u have to snip the old one and hook them to the stuff provided step 6 hook everything back up same way it came apart make sure your battery is charged then hook cables back to the battery then start vehicle . then if u dont have alt tester take positive cable unhook it from battery and if it stays then it is charging|||if no one can help you go to autozone and ask for a book on your car it will show you every bolt, screw and wire to disassemble and rebuild your ride|||Take it to a mechanic unless you are mechanically inclined. Otherwise you have to disconnect the neg. battery cable, loosen the belt tensioner, remove the belt, disconnect the wires on the back of the alternator, label the wires, remove the bolts, and put the new one in in reverse order. Good Luck!|||go to auto zone or one of the big chains they can sell you a manule on your specific vehicle they will have step by step and pics to help you do it your selfers get er done they will even tellyou what tool you will need to do the job good luck its easy and fun

How do I remove the alternator fuse on a 2007 Toyota Camry?

I was changing the alternator out on my 07 Camry 4 cylinder when the output wire from the alternator shorted out against the engine causing my car to not start. I think it%26#039;s the alternator fuse, but I can%26#039;t figure out how to get it out. Any suggestions? Thanks|||The Alt fuse is a large fuse that is bolted into the fuse box, you have to remove the fuse box turn it over take off the cover to access the screws that hold the fuse in.

I have seen this happen before, also will blow the fuse if you hook up the battery backwards.|||alternator.. fuse?

i doubt it on this vehicle, you probably messed up something expensiveee

good job|||Fuse wtf...it probably something else... like the belt or the pully/pulle i dont know how to spell it -_-|||omg you guys stay off the auto repair section if you dont know... belt pully...oh dang...lol.its near the battery. its a small blk box with a 20amp fuse/ there is also a 7.5amp fuse to and it is the alt signal fuse. there blacked out boxes so you have to look but there under the hood.|||You fried the alternator because the short was after the fuse.

Changing the alternator on my 93 Chevy Blazer S-10?

and the electric lead accidently touched the alternator case and sparks flew. Yeah...I didn%26#039;t disconnect the battery. Well now we have the new alternator hooked up and it won%26#039;t start. Doesn%26#039;t do any thing, no lights, buzzers, radio, nothing. We checked the battery and it is good. Did I fry the new alternator or is it just a fuse? Where are the fuses on this truck? I just got this truck and guess I need to find out where the fuses are.|||You have blown the fusible link. It is an in-line fuse that keeps the vehicle from burning up, in case the battery shorts out during an accident or other misfortunate reason. You will have to trace the main (+) cable to the starter, and off the same terminal on the starter is the main power line for the vehicle. Follow this big line until you locate the fusible link in it. Sometimes the link is attached to the firewall on the passenger side of the vehicle just above the heater motor. Some don%26#039;t say fusible link, and you will have to look for a burned looking place on the wire, as they are made into the wire. You can go purchase a new on at a parts store, and you will know what it looks like. Also check your main fuse box under the hood to see if you have a big fuse in there that blew. You can almost be sure you have fried the new alternator, as they do not take to being shorted out very well. They won%26#039;t charge at all sometimes and if you are lucky it might be ok.

Glad I could help you. Good Luck!!!|||Check the main fuse/fuse links. (THE BIG ONES IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT)|||When you arc%26#039;ed the alternator, you most likely killed the voltage regulator, which is built in. When it is dead... nothing works. You can check your owner%26#039;s manual for the location of the fuses, but you may as well plan on another new alternator....

Help in changing astra alternator?

im changing the alternator on my vauxhall astra tomorrow morning, just wanted to know if anyone had any previous experience or tips to help make the job a little easier? its an astra 1.7 tdi x reg cheers dudes|||i did my vectra alternator a couple of years ago and found that it wouldn%26#039;t come out through the bottom of the car so i had to dismantle the bits on the left hand side of the engine bay to get it out. not sure if you will have the same problem but just in case that%26#039;s the solution. luckily it wasn%26#039;t too fiddly|||if its vaux engine, i done my ex%26quot;s, easy enough, although bottom bolt can be a bit fidderly, make sure bottom bolt is in, first time i did it she was driving round for 3 days and it wasnt mounted properly, just take your time, know more than an hour should see job done|||before you put it in make sure it is good took me a whole day one time was new but wasnt no good they rebuild them so they just gave me another one still a whole day .when i assumed it was good|||As I recall the power steering pump needs to be moved before it will come out.

Make sure you disconnect the battery first.

Question about how to change an alternator in a 97 Chevy Malibu?

I am needing to remove and replace an alternator on a 1997 Chevy Malibu.I have a Haynes repair manual and it states to disconnect the negative battery terminal, remove the drive belt, disconnect the electrical connector from the alt.,remove mounting bolts, installation is reverse of removal.

As this is my first alternator change ,any additional tips or advice from someone who has done this??|||Use good quality, proper tools and be careful. The mounting bolts will be quite snug. Good luck.|||That%26#039;s pretty much it.

It%26#039;s easy. Even for a first timer.

Roll the tensioner away from the belt to ease it off the alternator pulley with a 15mm wrench or socket. It%26#039;s going to be pretty springy.|||nope ! that,s about it. just go by the haynes book. just make sure you spray the mounting bolts with pb blaster so you won,t break them off.

How do you change a bmw alternator belt?

I have a 2000 BMW 740i and I need help changing the alternator belt. I took it to a local mechanic and they took everything apart and do not know the alternator belt configuration. Any help is appreciated. thanks so much =]|||BMW cars do NOT cost any more than other cars to own, REALLY. Wear items like belts, brake pads, and rotors are very cheap in comparison and will outlast other similar parts from other car-makers, generally. Your problem will always be finding someone who charges a decent repair wage for labor. Labor is nearly ALWAYS more. THere should be a map of belt routing under your hood or in your owner%26#039;s manual. GOOD LUCK!! IT should be easy!!|||bmw are exspencive cars to own i have a 325i and it cost me a lot just for the simplest things. You need to take it to a dealership or a michanic that knows bmw but just be warned its gonna be $$$$$$

Is it easy to change an alternator on a mustang?

once i buy an alternator can i easliy swap and change bearing? any tips for changing bearing????????..... i can do breaks and tune ups on my car so hope that can indicate a lil of my skill level

do i have to remove belt, unplug alternator, remove, change bearing, swap core, replug and screw on and put belt on again?|||If you have a bad bearing on your alternator, there is going to be more damage to the bushing maybe the rotor and field coil. As a tech your best be for length of service is to replace the alternator it%26#039;s self and get a warranty, being a certified I can count how many times I%26#039;ve done that bearing swap on one finger, the problem is there%26#039;s not going to be any protection if you mess it up.... It sounds like you have a little knowledge but the bearing should or at-least better come with the new one already to go, take belt off unplug negative battery cable, remove serp belt and anything that%26#039;s interfering, then un-hook all electrical connections to the alternator a small flat head might be needed for clips on some of the newer ones. an engine size would help to next time.. past that its basically put the new one in and hook every thing back up, if you have a dvom make sure your getting 14v or a little better, there have been a couple of times I%26#039;ve go new ford alternators and had them bad out of the box. it should spin smooooooth and have no real noise out side or in.. good time to change serp belt and tentioner .|||It might be cheaper to just replace a bearing in an alternator but no one does that, you buy a remanufactured or new alternator. You did not say how old your Mustang is so I don%26#039;t know if it has a belt tensioner or not. Unless it is a classic Mustang it will have a tensioner and you will need a 1/2 inch flex handle to detension the belt so you can remove it. After that you just remove the wires from the alternator, unbolt it and take it out. Be sure to check all of the pulleys to be sure they rotate freely without any bearing chatter.|||If you are going to do your own work and want to learn, pick up both the Haynes and Chilton repair manuels for your car.Haynes is for the driver and Chilton is for the mechanic.Between the 2 you can get most things done.

I have a saab 900 ems 1989 car, i changed alternator but it still not charge, what else could be wrong?

i have 1989 saab ems, when the charge light is on,the car sudden stoped,RACV people said it was alternator fault,,later i changed alternator,it was second hand one from volvesaab parts, when i put replacement ,i start the car,the charge light is still on,i checked battery, it i was not charged, can anyone who is expert on the saab tell me what else could be wrong? i checked alternator drive belt,i think it is correctly tensioned.

so if the replacement of alternator is also deflective, how can i check whether is alternator problem or voltage regulator problem, because i have three month warrant .so i have to make sure it is alternator problem|||Look at the alternator for a wiring connection marked field,or f1.Check it with a test light or volt meter to be sure it is energized when the ignition is turned on.If it isn%26#039;t,there may be a fault with the circuit and it may be fused. If it checks out,the next suspect is the regulator which should be checked for poor connections or replaced. You can find out if the charging system is working by briefly disconnecting the battery with the engine running. If it continues to run,the system is OK,if it dies, the charge system is dead.|||well to check your alternator the first thing you can do is get yourself a mutimeter ( they are around 10 bucks from a electronic store) then while the car is running switch the mutimeter gauge to Volts then connect the positive(red) lead to the positive on the alternator (there should be a + sign) and the

black lead on the mulitimeter to the body of the alterantor to get a good ground.

if the meter reads over 13.1 volts then the alternator is good if not then the magnets inside the alternator may be worn down or the alternator coil may be broken.

its sounds to me as though you may have a charging system problem, if the battery is good then there could be an open in the charge system somewhere, auto electrics are best for finding faults like this since they have all the equipment at hand...goodluck|||On some designs the voltage regulator is built into the alternator, and on others it is a separate module, often mounted somewhere on the inside fender well. A bad voltage regulator could cause your problem, as could a dead short.

Anyone know how to change the alternator on a 1998 cavalier?

My son%26#039;s car broke down. The battery is one year old. I didn%26#039;t even open the hood yet. I just want to know where it is and if there is anything I should be aware of when changing the alternator. Thanks|||V6, Alternator is on back side of passenger side of engine. Remove negative battery cable, Release belt tension at automatic tensioner. Remove upper metal bracket over alternator. this bracket will have 2, 8 mm bolts into alternator. after bracket removed one lower bolt goes through alternator. this bold has a nut on the back side and is difficult to get out. But it can be done. Someone put it in there. you can get it out. After bolt is removed you can rotate the alternator to gain access to electrical connectors.

4 cyl Alternator located passenger side front if engine. Remove negative battery cable, Remove metal bracket from exhaust manifold, remove lower through bolt and rotate alternator to gain access to electrical conectors.|||Routis is right about the location.but to avoid serious damage remove the positive cable from the battery. then when you reconnect wait five minutes before starting. This allows the computer time to reset.|||It is probably on the passenger side of the car near the bottom. Only thing you should be aware of is that there will probably be little room to work to replace it. Might be easiest to get at it from under the car.

How to change alternator on ford fiesta?

Anyone got a diagram of how to change the alternator on a 1994 Fiesta 1.8D?? A scanned copy out a workshop manual would be helpful!!

Thanks|||Go to your local auto parts store and spend some money (usually $25-$30) on a repair manual for your car. If your a do it yourselfer then the repair manual is a must. It will give you all the information you need to do anything the car needs from wiring diagrams, troubleshooting sequences, and how to test anything on the car. Battery good, change alternator twice in one day, runs for 5 miles then shakes and cuts off?

put jumper cables for 20 minuets ,starts up and runs a few miles, shakes and cuts off .|||First and foremost check your battery cables. Corrosion on the cables will render the battery and alternator %26quot;useless%26quot;. This is because the electricity will not be able to flow irregardless of the power source (battery or alternator). If you have corrosion on one or both cables, replace them.

If you have an older vehicle also replace the voltage regulator. They are cheap and easy to replace. Newer vehicles have the regulators built into the alternator. If you have a newer vehicle, since you already have replaced the alternator, you have therefore replaced the regulator.

Also check the wires coming off the back of the alternator. Corrosion or broken wires in this area will not allow the electrical system to charge properly.|||its your alternator. its not able to charge the battery or either its your battery as its not able to hold a charge.|||book it in with the local auto electrician probably cheaper than guessing|||Have you connect the battery wrongly? Most cars are negative earthed. If you connect the polarity wrongly, no charge take place.

If your battery is in good condition, you do not need the jumper cables. Fastest way to check condition is to turn on he head lights, replace your battery if it is dim. Too weak a battery can cause stalking of engine due to overloading the alternator!

Changing a alternator of a 98 ford expedition?

im heading down to my brother in laws college tomorrow to change his altenator, i was just wondering what tools I would need, i dont wanna take my whole tool box|||Should just be a 14-17mm socket, an 8-11mm socket, and a ratchet. Do yourself a favor though and bring the whole tool box if it%26#039;s a travel type version. I never leave home without mine as you never know what will go wrong along the way, while you are there, or on your way back home.|||Make sure you have a set of wire cutters and a roll of electrical tape in the tool box . The alternator for that should come with the wiring plug already attached and you will have to splice in wires . You got to know exactly what to do on that model or you will break the plug when extracting it from the alternator . Ford did this for about 3 years . Also DO NOT try to take the plug out of the new alt. as it will void the warranty .

After changing The alternator on a 98 ford excort, does the battery need to be charged?

you need to make sure you check the alternator fluid, if thats low watch out.....that could be bad. Also if your battery keeps dying...check the blinker fluid, there might be a leek.|||It depends on if you drained the battery befor changing the altenator, More than likely you probaly will just have to jump start it, and let it run for a while. You also may need to get a new battery if u drained it to much or its old and such|||Not unless the battery is already dead, just ,make sure you follow instructions for reconnecting the battery you could damage the alternator.|||If the battery is dead the alternator will not work. The alternator needs 12VDC for the exciter field.|||The alternators job in a car is to charge the battery after starting, and to run the engine%26#039;s ignition system while it%26#039;s running. It also does all those nifty things like power your radio and lights. If the car will start, you don%26#039;t need to change the battery. Furthermore, current batteries have a typical life of 4.5 to 5 years. It%26#039;s likely that the battery in your Escort was replaced in 2002 or 2003, so unless you completely drained it of energy which can damage your typical lead acid battery, it%26#039;s likely that your current battery will last you a good one or two more years.|||Yes. It is a must that you have a fully charged battery. You need proper voltage on many alternators before it will energize. A low battery can kill an alternator. Also, never run a car with the battery disconnected.|||if it starts don%26#039;t worry about it. just check the alternator is working and it will charge your battery. if you can%26#039;t get it to start charge it at a low setting of like 2 amps.

Changing my alternator. Do I need a new belt?

The belt is in great condition, but I%26#039;m installing a high--output alternator that has an overdrive pulley that has six ribs. My current belt will fit in/over four of the ribs, but I want to know if it is necessary to seek out a wider belt that has 6 ribs. Will it make that much of a difference if I keep the existing belt on there? Thanks.|||Yes its better to put a new one with the exact size for your new alternator. Your old belt could start a new problem in the future. Hope this helps!|||oh yes, it will make a difference. that alternator and that pully will have a ton more drag than your stock alternator, so if you use the stock belt that%26#039;s only 2/3s the width needed, it%26#039;s going to slip and squeel like crazy, and the alternator won%26#039;t put out the right voltage. you need to get a 6 rib drive pully and a 6 rib belt to go with it.|||If your original belt has four ribs this means the crank shaft pulley has four ribs. A six rib belt will not fit over the crank shaft pulley. It sounds like you will need to change the pulley on the alternator from a six rib to a four rib. If you use a four rib belt on a six rib pulley the belt may wear out to quickly.|||no you dont need a new one. the amount of ribs on the pulley has nothing to do with the alternator. it has to do with the amount of ribs on the crank and or waterpump pulley. so even if you did get a new wider belt. it wouldnt fit on your crank pulley. so yes the stock one will do. just make sure u line it up on the right ribs, if you dont, your going to hear a light scraping/squeeking noise. because the belt will be slightly slipping.|||the belt rides on more than just the alternator

if the crankshaft pulley only has 4 ribs you can not use the 6 rib belt

you are better off using the belt you have

you should have transferred the pulley from your old alt to the new one

Jim|||Is your crank pulley 4, then you can%26#039;t put a 6 ribbed belt on a 4 ribbed pulley.

Beside that point, don%26#039;t you need a longer belt to use with the overdrive pulley.|||yah it might be safe to put the new belt on incase if u put the old one back it might slipe off or start to tare up|||it is not Necessary to change the belt|||You could use the original but I would play safe with a correct width new belt.

Changed alternator and battery but now the car spits sputters and dies after a minute?

Look VERY carefully at the battery terminals that connect to the battery. These tend to crack and even a very small crack can prevent continuity and will cause your car to die.|||The most common and cheepest thing would be to replace the fuel filter. It could need a tune up cap, rotor, plugs wires or the fuel pump may be bad.|||Stopped up fuel filter, also change plugs and wires.

The long bolt swings out the alternator increasing the tension on the belt. You don%26#039;t need to take any of the bolts completely off just enough to be able to remove the belt. Need directions for changing an alternator in my Ford Ranger?

99 Ford Ranger, six cylinder, 3.4 liter. Need Aternator, shop wanted to charge $398 plus extra for the belt. I don%26#039;t have this kind of money at all. Will have to do it myself. Any kind of basic directions or links would be greatly appreaciated.

thank you|||First disconnect the battery then remove belt by slackening the tensioner(watch your fingers!) then remove red wire on the back( a 10mm nut holds this on) Then unplug other wire, remove the bolts and remove. Installation is reverse procedure.|||go to a auto parts store and buy the haynes book for a 99 ranger it will tell you how to do that job and many more cost about 15 dollars|||Go to an auto parts store and buy a repair manual for your truck. It will cost you around 15-20 bucks, and will have step by step instructions in it to do the repair. Alternators are USUALLY a pretty easy item to replace. A new alternator should cost you a little under $100 at an auto parts store, and a new belt around 30 bucks. So for around $150 you can do it yourself and save over $250. I changed the alternator and belt in my %26#039;94 GMC Yukon last week, and it took me less than an hour, but I have a lot of experience working on cars. Most auto parts stores are very helpful, and will point you in the right direction. Good luck!|||Try having the alternator rebuilt, it usually takes a day of two, sometimes if the rebuild shop is not too busy maybe a few hours....try finding one in the phone book.

The next bet would be one of your chain stores like Advance Auto or Auto Zone.

You can buy a how to manual from them too around twenty bucks.

If you can change it yourself and have it rebuilt you will get out for less than a hundred bucks...should be way less.

Remember to disconnect the battery cable before you touch the alternator with a tool. if you ground it out while the battery is still connected...sparks fly everywhere...not good...plus you could accidently cause the starter to engage the fly wheel and start the Ranger rolling...not good either when you are underneath it!.... just by the %26quot;how to%26quot; manual and it will take you step by step....well worth the 20 bucks you will spend on it.|||That%26#039;s ridiculous. It takes an experienced person about 30 minutes to change an alternator. You pretty much just disconnect the black battery terminal, take the belt off, unplug the wires, unbolt the alternator and put the rebuilt one you got at Autozone on. Hook up the wires the same way they were on the old one, reconnect the battery, put the belt back on and crank er up.

You might try a different shop. Somebody is trying to rip you off.

New alternator whines and smells like burning wires?

I just changed alternator and new one whines high pitch and smells bad like wires burning. 3.3L V-6 1999 doodge caravan sport. they sold me a 130 amp. They have a 130 and a 90. Did they sell me wrong one and it is too strong?|||Where did you buy it? Are there any reasons why changing the alternator in a vehicle would cause the air conditiner to ....?

start blowing air that is not very cold?|||other answers so far are possible, also possible that in process of changing the alternator, some wires were not properly hooked back up. such as a/c clutch wires or the fan wires. try starting the vehicle with a/c on and see if the clutch on the front is rotating. this will tell you if the compressor is pumping or not. if not then a leak was possible or the wire to the clutch may not have been properly hooked back up|||Yes. Someone hit one of the hoses and caused a small leak while changing the alternator, or the belt was not tightened up after instalation. Have the latter checked first.|||it is possible that an a/c line was disturbed enough to cause a leak... some models may need to be reset after the battery cable was removed

2000 Ford Windstar battery keeps dying after changing alternator?

My wifes 2000 Ford Windstar would not start the other day. So, we jumped it and drove it to Autozone to have the battery tested, the battery tested fine, but alternator failed (failed diode). We replaced the alternator and jumped the car again, recharged battery (with a crappy charger) for about an hour, then drove it home (about 20 minutes). Next day it was dead again, so I took battery out, took it to Autozone once again, had battery charged and tested, it tested good. Started up all night and in the morning, but around 5 p.m it was dead again! Please Help! This is getting very frustrating, time consuming and costly! I don%26#039;t see anything that could possibly be draining the battery, everything is turned off.|||Those %26quot;checks%26quot; at auto parts stores, have told me the battery was good, But it never was! I would buy a new battery, if its getting old. And if you replaced the Alternator, it should have been NEW or refurbished not from a Junkyard!

What can i put without changing alternator?

Hey i have a 2000 avalon with a stock alternator. I want to put a sub in it something that can rock the whole school parking lot. I want to know what is the max amount of watts you can put in that car without destroying or having problems with your car. this is without any extra battery i m just talking about sub and amp. also what is the max RMS i can put in if i get a battery too but still the stock alternator.

i was looking at Orion HCCA 12.2. is that feisable with the AQ amp?? just by doing big 3 and getting a battery will that be fine??|||Adding a battery will only help if your car is OFF, you can play your system longer before your battery dies. It%26#039;s the alternator that%26#039;s doing most of the work when your car is ON. %26#039;Big 3%26#039; will only help your alternator achieve higher efficiency, but it%26#039;s still limiter by how many amps it can put out.

You need to find out your alternator%26#039;s ampere rating, I think it%26#039;s a 100A(amps) alternator for an avalon(but im not sure). 30-50% of those amps goes to your car.

Let%26#039;s say your car uses 40%, 100A x 40% = 60A.

You%26#039;re left with 60 amps for your sound system, your amplifier should have a fuse rating no bigger than 60A.

That%26#039;s about 760W-860W RMS max for your system when your car is ON.

You can have a 2000W amplifier playing loud with your car OFF, but the battery wont last long. You can use that same amplifier when the car is ON, but you have to set the gains down or play at low Volume. If you play your music loud while the car is ON with a big amplifier, you%26#039;ll kill your alternator.

Getting a good custom box makes a big difference on how loud your subs can get. Get a sub with higher sensitivity rating if you plan to use a small amp.|||a 2000 watt RMS sub?

You%26#039;ll definitely need to upgrade your alt., stock alternators are often only selected with the features your vehicle has in mind.

If your vehicle was an SUV, or a larger vehicle,

you could%26#039;ve probably gotten about 1000-1400 watts without significant dimming.

But a car.. not really sure how much it can handle...

i%26#039;d guess about 700watts without significant dimming WITH the big 3 upgrade.

It also depends on the efficiency of your amp,

how well it converts DC(power) into AC(audio signal).

Any tips or advice on changing an alternator in an 88 Deville?

Well, I got the No Charge message while driving, and then the Service Now light came on. I pulled the codes, and got

Voltage Out of Range [ALL SOL]

and

Set Vs. Vehicle Speed Difference

I went to Autozone, and had them check my battery in hopes of it being the issue. The voltage was only around 11volts while running, and looked like it was dropping as it sat. The guy told me it was the alternator. I%26#039;ve changed alternators on a 87 Cavalier and 90 Camry before, so is there any reason I would not be able to do this one?|||just unhook the battery, take the belt off and take the long bolt out and any other brackets then it should come off.

How dow you change alternator on combo van?

Is it easy or hard to change Alternator on a 2000 combo van. do i need any special toolsto take fan belt off.|||no if it has a self tensioner then a 15 mm spanner will do the job

Messed up in the beginning of changing alternator?

Okay... I think we figured out WHY we can%26#039;t get the belt back on our %26#039;98 Chevy Malibu 3.1L V6. But we wanted to get views on it before we took it to the shop. When you install the new alternator are you supposed to get slack on the belt BEFORE removing the alternator? We just took the belt off and replaced the alternator. Now we%26#039;re trying to get the belt back on (not replacing it at the moment). But we can%26#039;t get enough slack. Were we supposed to adjust the Automatic Belt Tensioner to get the slack before removing the belt and alternator? My second question is now that we don%26#039;t have enough slack, is there anyway of fixing it. We know we messed up (atleast we think we did) and wanted to see if there was a way of fixing it and getting the belt on BEFORE we end up taking it to the shop to pay dearly for our mistake. So my two questions are:

1. Were we supposed to get slack in the beginning of changing the alternator?

2. Is there anyway of getting slack now that the new alternator is in place and just need to put the belt back on all the pulleys etc?

And I hope we don%26#039;t get smart remarks... We know we probably screwed up just want to know if we can fix it?|||just get the proper tool to pull on the belt tensioner and just follow the picture on the top of the front grill if you dont have one just go to any auto parts store and get one. gd lk|||The fact you were able to remove the belt in the first place without a serpentine belt tensioner removal tool tell me the tensioner spring is #1. Too weak, #2. They didn%26#039;t give you the corrrect replacement belt (too long) #3. The routing of the belt isn%26#039;t quite correct.

Is it Common to replace Wires when changing an Alternator?

And will the Shop realize my AC COmpressor has been removed?|||Your Car is too messed up, Bink!|||No and yes.|||Depends on the condition.. but no not if their still in usuable condition.

Then again its a shop, theyll probably order you a new engine if you have

a leak so go over carefully what you%26#039;re paying for.

Changing alternator for idiots?

is their a step by step instruction on replacing an alternator in a jeep grand Cherokee on the net?|||Changing the alternator is a cake walk on a GC. Its placed perfectly, and most the bolts are a simple wrench approach.

Loosen the tension on the belt by taking a socket wrench and trying to turn the bolt on the tensioner pulley - you%26#039;ll then be able to remove the belt from the alternator. Remove all the wire connections from the alternator - they only go on one way, so there%26#039;s no confusion.

Then, remove the bolts - no particular order. I like leaving the top one on, to support the alternator, but some will leave the lower one on, so the alternator %26quot;hinges%26quot; and makes access easier.

Installation is the opposite of removal and is just as easy. I recommend you change the belt at this time - nothing worse than an old belt left on when it could be replaced for cheap.

Take a look at your alternator - do you see anything that might confuse you?

Will changing my car altenator to a higher amperage alternator damage my cars electronics?

I%26#039;m planning to do a big three, change to a higher amperage alternator and changing a higher amperage battery, will that damage my car electrical component?|||The voltage is the important thing. The alternator can be a million amp capacity, but it will only put out as much as the system needs.|||no your alternator only charges your battery the amps that come out of your battery will be the same...and i doubt your it will hurt anything having a higher amp as long as there are fuses hooked up to everything|||no,but you might have to change the alternater fuse if your car has one. I did a similar change when I had a car that had 5000 watt stereo system and had no problems|||nope all is good

I have a question about changing an alternator in a 1995 Nissan Altima?

are they very expensive.Do I need special tools to change it?|||You should not need any special tools as long as the new alternator comes with the pulley attached. A basic set of metric wrenches, a rachet and metric sockets should get the job done.

Should you need to swap the puller, just pull the old alternator off the car and take both new and old to a shop and have them swap the pulley out.

Before you start the job.....

Remember to disconnect the negative battery terminal and place the cable so it cannot accidently touch the terminal while you are working.|||Your best bet would be to go to a junk yard and get one if you dont mind it being used. However they can be very expensive. I have seen them range from $75 to $500 dollars.

In a Nissan I believe it will cost anywhere around $150-$200 and thats a ball-park figure. And if your getting it from the manufacturer.

You shouldnt need and special tools. Just a socket wrench and the right size socket. However the bolt could either be metric or standard. Its easier to get the thing out if you take the belt off first.

Should be a wheel down behind the alternator that you can use a big screw driver as leverage and tilt the wheel just right to make the belt slip off.

Sometimes on some vehicles you have to take off excess around the alternator just to get it out. They can be a pain!|||good luck|||If it has a Hitachi alternator, then there is a replaceable brush assembly that can be changed out. About 30 bucks.

Changing alternator 99 deville?

in the process of TRYING to change alternator in 1999 deville.

can get to bolts etc. But how do you get it out of the car??

doesn,t look like there is an exit point for this thing.

Help!!!|||You need to remove the top radiator panel and push the radiator forward, but be careful not to puncture the radiator.

This is from the factory service manual:

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Remove the accessory drive belt.

Remove the upper front bolt.

Raise and suitably support the vehicle.

Remove the front engine splash shield.

Remove the radiator support access panel.

Loosen the rear generator bracket from the engine.

Remove the top bolt.

Remove the front lower mounting bolt.

Remove the lower rear mounting bolt.

Remove the upper rear mounting bolt.

Remove the duct from the back of the generator.

Disconnect the following electrical connections:

Regulator

Battery output

Heated windshield (if equipped).

Remove the front generator/ A/C bracket.

Rotate the generator and remove.

I need help changing an Alternator in a '96 Chevy Cavalier.?

I need to change alternator%26#039;s on a 1996 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L w/air. Is there a belt tensioner or something that needs to be loosened when taking the old alternator off? On some older cars, the alternator was on a pivot - but this one seems to just hard bolt on it two places. Is there something I%26#039;m missing?|||There is a tensioner.

Look here:

http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker鈥?/a>

In Fig 1. The guy has right hand on a wrench that is releasing the tension on the tensioner pully to allow you to remove the belt.|||You%26#039;re in luck. I just replaced my buddys about 2 weeks ago. If I remembe right you just have to take the bolts loose. There should be a tensioner near the rear of the engine down low, and if you can%26#039;t locate it, look for the sticker that shows where the belt goes.

Serpintine belts suck!|||I%26#039;m not positive in your case, but most modern serpentine belt systems have a tensioner pulley. You can usually figure out which one it is by the size of it, since they are usually small. Also, it won%26#039;t be driving anything like a power steering pump or water pump, so there will be nothing behind it. When you find it, use a socket and ratchet to hook onto the nut on the front to pull the tension off the belt so you can pull it off. They are on a pivot, so it will swing out of the way. Good luck.|||It probably has a tension pulley. Check the belt pattern diagram pic on the front of the engine compartment or in the owners manual. The tension pulley will be spring loaded and have a hole for a 3/8 breaker bar or ratchet so you can release the tension and take the belt off. With the belt off the alternator you can replace the alternator release the tension again put the belt back on and reapply the tension.|||make sur e loosen one end pull the hole bolt out that the altinator is pivoting on pull the bolt to you stick u block of wood under to shimmy bolt out towards radiator

What is the labor cost of changing a alternator in a 1990 Oldsmobile Silohutte?

My alternator went out and want to find the right price before shopping w/ mechanics for the right price|||It should be about an hours work. That said expect it to be as high as an hour and a half. The cost should be about $50 - $100 for this job depending on where you live.

It used to take about 20 - 30 minutes to do this sort of thing, but newer cars have so much stuff in the way that it now takes longer.|||about 35$ plus parts|||well if u lived in washington labor cost would be 40.00 that for my shop cost. but u can do it ur self. all it is two bolt and maybe stablelizer bakets ahd remove the neg cable frist|||depends what engine is in it....if it has anything but a DOHC 3.4 then one to an hour and a half....if it has the morphodite 3.4 then it%26#039;s more like four or five hours because of its horrible location|||Most mechs charge between 50 - 75 an hour Ask what there rate is ,,, an alternator isnt a hard thing to do for anyone and should not take a mech more than 1%26amp;1/2 hours on even the hardest of alternators. never go to a dealership the will do sevear damage to youre wallet. also all mecanics charge you more just to order the part even though they pay less.|||The cost of the alternator, IF you do it yourself!

The job is not hard.

You will need a breaker bar or strong rachet (breaker bar recommended) socket to fit, depending on type of tensioner,

Pull tensioner to slack, remove belt.

(Try to keep belt on other pullys as it is easier to replace this way)

Remove bolts holding alt. in, (and anything that is in the way)

Lift alt. out and replace in reverse order.

Pull tensioner to slack again and reset belt.

If you feel that you are unable to do this job, this is where friends with tools comes in nicely.

How hard is changing an alternator on a '97 Ford Ranger?

Is this something the mechanically challenged could do? What%26#039;s a fair price to pay for an alternator?|||Its easy Disconnect battery remove belt, Disconnect alternator wires, remove 2 bolts, replace alternator replace belt plug up, replace belt simple, cost 35-40 rebuilt OK, about 75 new, I would recommend a re built , They do a good job , However if it goes bad they will replace it for free. good luck|||extremely hard, that%26#039;s why the mechanic will charge between $300 to $700|||Just loosen the bolts, take the belt off, unplug it, and then take it out. Then go have it tested.|||It should cost about 49 dollars at checker and it is as easy as putting on chap stick to replace.|||Alternators don%26#039;t tend to be too difficult to change out.

Instructions with photos can be found here:

http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/090鈥?/a>|||If the alternator is right up near the top of the engine, it should be an easy job, but you have to disconnect the battery cables before you start the job, and you may need a helping hand when you tighten the fan belt. Make sure you get the right part number for your engine, because some alternators are computer controlled and some are not, even for the same model vehicle sometimes. Also make sure your battery is good and charged up before using the new alternator.|||What size engine does the truck have (2.3L, 3.0L, or 4.0L)? Advance Auto Parts usually has an alternator for around $130. You%26#039;ll have to take your old one in though, or else you%26#039;ll have a core charge added on. You can return it later and get the refund if you need to. Their usually not too hard if its on the top of the engine. I%26#039;ve got a 1994 4.0L and its not that difficult. You can usually do it with just a couple of hand tools.

Be sure to check out the warranty on the alternator. Those $49 dollar one usually only have a warranty for about a year, which they tend to only last that long. The Advance alternators have a lifetime warranty. Also, they%26#039;ll price match anywhere else with a lifetime warranty. Check out their website for more information about how to install it.

www.advanceautoparts.com|||I don%26#039;t think that I%26#039;d attempt it because of the electronics in cars these days. If you%26#039;re mechanically challenged, don%26#039;t even attempt it. If you have a friend who does know how to deal with car electronics and knows what they%26#039;re doing, go ahead. If you take the car to a mechanic, plan on spending between $200 - $400, depending on mechanic and price of alternator (new or used alternator? How much does mechanic charge for labor per hour?).|||Usually your local auto shop will have the alternator you are looking for and calling around to 3 or more shops will find you the best price. YOu will likely have to return the old alternator for a %26#039;core return%26#039; which means, they give you money back for the old one, usually barely worth the trip back.

If this is a vehicle you plan on keeping for a bit, I would pickup a CHILTON book on it. It will show you , pretty much, how to replace the alternator.

But basically, once you locate the alternator, you will have to unbolt it from the engine and replace it with the new one, and plug her in. Keep in mind however that belts that go around the alternator, on many vehichles also go around other items on the vehichle like the fan, air conditioner etc. If you do not pull this tight enough, you will get SQUEELING. If you pull it too tight you are liable to break the belt in a few weeks.

Inspect the belt to make sure it is not worn too bad and that you do not have to replace this also. I would suggest this.

THis is probably one of the easiest things a mechanic can do to a car honestly, that the average guy chooses not to do.

All told I could do it in an hour but have been working on cars for a few years, usually because something breaks.

I learned just like you, by just doing it.

Sometimes you have to remove %26#039;other stuff%26#039; to get to the stuff you need to fix. Be sure to document (write down) what bolts etc go where. Make drawings if it helps you.

The easiest way to make sure the belt is tight enough, is to see that there is an adjustment you can use on the alternator that allows you to pull the slack out from the belt and then tighten the alternator down with a bolt or two, usually on some sort of slider. You%26#039;ll know what I mean when you see it. Just pull it as tight as you can, and then tighten the bolt down. Don%26#039;t try to SUPER pull the alternator tight, just enough muscle that you are straining yourself. If you are a weakling, then pull tight, if you are a big guy that is actually strong - then be gentle. I told one guy this and he said it was dead on: Pull the alternator hard enough away from the pulleys and belts, tightening the belts hard enough that if you suddenly let go and hit yourself in the stomach, you would definetely feel it and not like it. :)

Btw get the chilton book...go on ebay. Usually about $25 bucks.|||nope .You are mechanically challenge. if You, by a remote coincidence, install the alternator .You will not be able to install the belt.

91 Toyota Pickup Alternator changing?

I need a how to on changing alternator on a 91 Toyota Pickup with 22-RE engine. Anyone point me in the direction with a link?|||Well the first thing you do is take the negative battery cable of the battery. Then locate the alternator. First you have to remove the belt on the alternator. There is some systems that are different. You probally have to lossen the alternator on the car to remove the belt. After the belt if off remove the bottom bolt on the alternator. Then find the top alternator bolt. Then the alternator should come loose. You then remove the plug in for the wiring on the alternator. You also need to remove the ground on the back side of the alternator. YOu are done. Reverse steps to put new one on. Hope that helps|||disconnect the battary losen the alt belt the the bolts out of the alt and the wires going to the back of it|||unless it is something out fo the ordinary, most alternators are held on by two or three bolts. in fact most of them are 14mm bolts! just unplug battery first, unplug the alternator and you might have one wire attached with a nut to take off, and take out bolts. to reattach just do the reversal. be sure to check your belt tension before you remove the old one. if it is good, aim for the same tension with your new one.

Changing Alternator Belt On 1994 Lexus ES300?

Does Anyone Know Step By Step Instructions On How To Change? I Basically Need To Know If There Is A Tension-er Pulley, Or Do You Just Loosen Alternator And Change Belt?|||If you can%26#039;t tell by looking at it maybe you should get a mechanic.

Changing alternator belt on Acura Legend?

I have a 1982 Acura Legend and need to chang the alternator belt. It looks as if removing the battery will give me better access to the bolts but I was wondering if there were any bolts, etc. that I will have to rech from under the car or if all (I hope) are reasonable accessible. Thanks!|||there should be a schematic under the hood on a sticker. As for bolts, you simply need to move the belt tensioner forward to loosen. It should slip right off.

Help my car engine started shaking after changing alternator bearing?

i have 1994 suzuki swift 1.0L a few days ago my car alternator bearing jammed and the engine stop working (stalled) then the bearing was replaced by a qualifed mechanic but after that my car engine was shaking at idle like its not properly tuned i assure u before this incidence

its working perfect could you tell me the reason of this issue, i%26#039;ll be thankful to you :)|||I don%26#039;t know what you mean by the alternator bearing jammed and the engine stalled. Most times the alternator bearing will just start making a lot of noise and that%26#039;s all, and if it did jam, that would only stop the alternator and not stall the car.

The mechanic would have to explain how he replaced an alternator bearing. Alternators are sold new or rebuilt and I%26#039;ve never heard of replacing the alternator bearing.

Finally, if it%26#039;s a timing problem, that%26#039;s part of the tune-up to figure that out.|||If the belt shredded I%26#039;d bet it pulled a sensor wire or vacuum line off. Or the mechanic might have inadvertently knocked something loose, easy to do and unfortunately it happens once in a while even to the best of us. Other than that the only thing I can think of is the possibility that you overheated it by driving with the belt stuck and the coolant not circulating. I hate to say head gasket but that could do it too. I hope it%26#039;s the simple fix.

I have a 99 freightliner that will not hold a charge after changing alternator?

I changed a bad alternator and starter in the last 2 days and now the truck will not keep a charge and I don%26#039;t know why everything was hooked up correctly but still not positive outcomes|||you%26#039;re battery could be bad,or its not properly grounded|||Load test the batteries. If one is bad then it%26#039;ll pull down the charge on any others attached with it. Usually batteries need replacing after a few years anyways so if you had bad charging levels it places more drain on the batteries. This means if one was not in perfect condition it could have resulted in making it fail sooner rather than later.|||shorted battery will drain the others...

or you have something drawing on the batterys

when parked.. to check, turn everything off and remove

one battery connection, usually the ground and see

if it sparks when you touch it to post... or better

use a volt meter, to see what the draw is.. also

check alternator output is..

Battery light on after changing alternator?

I have a 1996 Mazda Millennium that the battery would always go dead on me if it sat for a couple of days. Had battery checked and charged, and it checked good. So i changed the alternator and the light is still on. What do you think is wrong?|||If the light is still on you still have a problem. Have your charging system checked at almost any auto parts store. Unless the new alternator is faulty its probably the battery.|||The battery light is discharging you battery.|||Possibly you have already bought an alternator you didn%26#039;t need! So it is time you tried to find out what is wrong!

You can take car and have charging system checked free at WalMart, AutoZone, and lots of other auto parts places! you should have had the old alternator checked,-- before you bought a new one (but too late for that now)!

Try disconnecting one of battery cables (for a few days)-and see if battery goes dead -- if it stays %26quot;up%26quot; obviously the battery must be good --- note that I have seen batterys that checked good, - but still went dead within a week!

Try connecting battery cable in dark, if you see more than a %26quot;small spark%26quot;, you have something in vehicle causing battery to drain! Even perfect alternator will not keep a battery up, - if a heavy enough drain on battery to run it down! If you have an old headlingt around, hook a couple wires 2-3 feet long to the good filiament on it, - and disconnect one battery cable, hook wires on to cable and battery terminal, - if there is enough %26quot;drain%26quot; available to make that light come on bright enough to see it burning in daylight, - it is drawing enough somewhere to run battery down in a couple days (or less)! You can start removing fuses and checking to see if things turned off, (put headlight where you can see it easily), -- when the light goes out,- you have found the circuit that is causing problem! Don%26#039;t forget that %26quot;courtesy light%26quot; is on when door open, so you might want to push button on switch in , - or put duct tape over it to keep switch turned off! This works just as well as a meter, - and you don%26#039;t have to %26quot;strain%26quot; to see needle!---- Also it is good for finding shorts in circuits, as you just put it in fusaebox connections for fuse that keeps blowing. When you find short (and remove it even momentarily), - the light will blink, --or go out when short removed! Such as wire shorting on frame, - move wire a little and it goes out, move a little and it goes back on, -- you can work down to point of contact, find and insulate so it doesn%26#039;t %26quot;short%26quot; anymore! So you have a %26quot;cheap test instrument%26quot;,- that is worth putting up for %26quot;next time%26quot;!

Now about the %26quot;new alternator%26quot;, - just because it is new, doesn%26#039;t mean it is any good! I have seen lots of %26quot;new%26quot; and %26quot;rebuilt%26quot; parts (taken right from box) that were no good!

I am assuming that all the wires are hooked up right, and the wires on plugs are good ( sometiomes wire %26quot;fatigue%26quot; fractures,- right at connectin on terminal, and is not connecting, - just being held on by insulation! Of course the %26quot;check at %26quot;auto parts or WalMart stores %26quot;should have shown%26quot; that,--- and this is why you have it checked on vehicle. Even if alternator and battery good, the circuitry still has to be good for them to work properly!|||Check the Red Wire from the Alternator for the Fusable Link being bad, also Grounds at Starter to Block, Alternator to Block %26amp; Block Strap to Firewall. Are your belts and Tensioner good?|||I am not a fan of autozone but at least you can go to the experts there and get a free charging system analysis done, just remember to tip the dude 5 bucks for his time. This test costs you nothing and it tests the battery, alternator, and starter.|||the battery %26#039;ground to body%26#039; wire or connection might be bad .|||the battery maybe who check it... who check the alternator if one is guessing at whats wrong you might end up spending more than is needed... belts tight battery cable clean and tight how old is it more than 3 yrs good chance it the battery
